  1. I can't speak for a Volvo as far as "push starting" but can assure you a Peterbilt tends to "roll over" easily. Rob

    Gas Prices

It may sound racist and I don't mean it to be but a black man running for president brought out a large amount of black voters with no agenda other than to put a black man into the office. Like it or not, the facts support this. Rob
  3. To my ratio and proportion eye I'd say the hood is the standard length for an R700. This is judging by the wheel opening radius and placement, the length of the hood extension from the back of the fender rearward, and the length of the flat portion of the hood panel itself. I don't see any difference in any of these measurements from mine. This is of course, just a guess. A Detroit "V" series engine in a straight frame rail truck would be a tight fit. I'm certain it could be done but with the splayed frame of an eastern R model, the engine could sit lower in the frame and probably not have some of the clearance issues of the straight rail truck such as an RS, or RL700 series. This is why I'm going with the R795 for my project. Rob
  4. Most likely the filler panels are modified from normal to use the dual "Farr" air cleaners. Those things really free flow air but do not silence at all. A Detroit with them is quite loud during operation. I surmise the cowl vent was eliminated to allow clearance for the rear blower on the engine as they sit quite high in the valley. This coupled with the air intake adapter to feed both blowers I'd think the vent would be in the way. I've never seen a 12V-71 powered R model before so these are just s.w.a.g. Rob

  6. The slip splines at the column above your knees when in the driver's seat. The u-joints must be in the same plane of rotation at the same time to avoid binding. Pull the shafts apart and ensure the u-joint angles are in the same plane when installed. This means if a cap is facing straight up on the gear end, a cap on the other end should be oriented exactly the same way. If the spline is one tooth off, (probably 15 degees angular) the slip is "out of time" and will bind as you turn the steering wheel. Rob
  7. That's good. His description was pretty accurate but the delivery surely turned off bidders as it ended with none that I seen. I certainly didn't need another one or the doghouse would be populated once again; and it's cold outside. Hope your plans go through well with it. I remember that engine in the barn. Rob
  8. Seen that on ebay. Sellers disposition appeared to be a bit "gruff". Rob

    Gotta Brag:

I highly recommend doing business with this outfit if they can serve your needs. Too many positive attributes told by others, and I am first hand witness. Rob
  10. Yes and the stategic use of "velcro" on the closure flap to avoid needing the "combover" to keep my ass warm. Rob
  11. Seems like I've been doing just that for about 36 years now. Ain't got shit to show for my effort. Rob
  12. He does. I offered the "teddy" which he could use for a blanket when the bear is away. Rob

  14. Would go nice with my "leather teddy". Rob

    Gotta Brag:

Noooooo, not on anything I done. You remember the trailer I'd purchased off of ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300506910803&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT The sale went great. After posting on here and asking if anybody could go look at this trailer so I wouldn't need to purchase completely blind, I received not one or two, but nearly a dozen replies and four phone calls on very short order offering to help me out. Really do appreciate the thought too. Everyone plainly stated that if Brian Thiabault at Joseph Equipment stated something was a certain way, it could be relied upon. After talking with Brian on the phone and figgering how much the trailer was, ($6500.00) I purchased it. I tried to get BMT participants to bring it to the shop but when I couldn't get away for the trip, I contracted it out. There was some unknown damage in the neck area as the main beams needed repair due to rust discovered upon arrival at the shop. After evaluating the cost and effort needed for a repair, I was refunded a fair amount to get the task accomplished. Can't ask for better than that when the trailer was purchased "as is". This damage was an oversight, plain and simple. After speaking with Brian I do believe this was an honest mistake and I am very happy with the outcome and settlement. I would not hesitate to use them for a vendor again should they have something I need. Rob
  16. Long hood is good. Rob
  17. Yes, the front mount crossmember is aluminum and much thicker in section than the steel ones. Also this one runs straight across the truck. Rob
  18. Hi Glenn, that makes me wonder if the ball could be pressed out, turned 90 degrees to a new wear surface, then welded back into the arm? Might destroy the surface hardening of the ball end. Rob
  19. A. Never had that problem till "Momma" whacked my nuts. Don't need the length any longer. B. I don't know either; hence the reason I asked. C. I'm fantastically lost here. D. I'm certain, Glenn, James, or Herb could put me on the right track.
  20. Hi Trent, the original drag link is splined differently than the replacement power steering gear. Also, the original drag link has a torque link installed as the truck has "Air-O-Matic" steering which doesn't work well. The V8 front crossmember is right in the way to install the upper bolt in the gear housing so I plan to move the gear itself forward about 1/2" to allow clearance. This should allow for free swing movement of the pitman arm without contacting anything. I have another pitman arm from a "L" series Ford truck that is only about 1/8th" longer so it also could be used. I kept this part knowing it is good. Now that I think about it, I also have the drag link in the shop that is longer than a Mack link. The Cat powered RL has the same setup I'm going to so reference is easy to look at. Thanks, Rob
  21. Another member helped me out last week with a power steering gear for my RL797L. The donor truck was an early 80's "RS600" series "Valueliner". The drag link is a couple of inches too short for my application and I'm thinking I can stretch that to right amount. Question is this: the pitman arm ball has about a .020 circular depression in the for and aft sides from normal wear. Is the ball itself replaceable, or is the complete arm serviced? Also, are there drag link rebuild kits and boots still available? Thanks, Rob

    Golf Balls:

A man entered the bus with both of his front pockets full of golf balls and sat down next to a beautiful (you guessed it) blonde. The puzzled blonde kept looking at him and his bulging pockets. Finally, after many such glances from her, he said “its golf balls.” Nevertheless, the blonde continued to look at him for a very long time, deeply thinking about what he had said. After several minutes, not being able to contain her curiosity any longer, she asked - “Does it hurt as much as tennis elbow?”
  23. It's twisted on the right side. Did a good job during the rollover however. Rob
  24. Frozen crabs & the Blonde Stewardess A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator. He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior. Shortly before landing in New York , she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, "Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs, in New Orleans, please raise your hand?" Not one hand went up ..... so she took them home and ate them. Two lessons here: 1. Lawyers aren't as smart as they think they are. 2. Blondes aren't as dumb as most folks think.
  25. My compliments to the driver's artistic talent. Rob
