  1. I'm surprised at that. There is a large reinforcing plate on some cabs that is internal and behind the trim cards that spreads the pull over the back of the structure. I've seen some cabs with it, some without, and never knew why. I don't like cab mounted exhaust from the R model days of fixing them. As all know they were steel cabs and stronger in that application when new than aluminum or fiberglass to mount to. Seen a bunch of them busted out, (vocational trucks) over the years so kinda adopted the bracing that the later models used with vertical risers which can be made very stout. I've never worked on a Granite so cannot answer for their construction at all. In fact limited CH series came through the shop and that's been a long time ago now.
  2. Found my pumps snaking out under a bench but I don't remember sticking them down there. I know I'm alone when I say I've got too much crap in my shop to find anything when I need it. Rotation is correct direction so don't even need to take anything apart.
  3. There were three of them at the Peoria, IL regional airport supporting the helo squadrons based there. Good running trucks that wouldn't get out of their own way.
  4. It's not hard to do but I would not mount to the cab, nor bunk. Strictly mount to your risers. Donaldson makes a nice exhaust splitter to fashion dual exhaust and if you have a tube bender around your area they can fashion the offsets you would need. In years gone past I've built several but had a buddy whom worked a bending shop in Peoria so was inexpensive to do, (for me) at the time.
  5. That I feel can be repaired. If you can do without the manifold a couple of weeks and want to send it to me I'd like to see it closer.
  6. Would you post up a photo of your broken manifold? I'd like to see if I could repair it. My "spare" 401 engine does not have an exhaust manifold installed.
  7. You are quite welcome. The original air filters used on the Mack transmissions were usually white also. I have those also.
  8. Remember the old modeling clay trick and playing with head gasket compressed thickness(s) to keep the valves and pistons from "Kissing" each other?
  9. Myself, I can't say I had good luck with a mismatched piston. Only did that once in a Detroit Diesel with a customer supplied piston and sleeve assembly but the engine always ran less than 100% when put back together. Not really a miss and compression pressure was very close to the other seven cylinders, (analog gauge) but there was always a slight "stumble" in that cylinder I felt. I'm thinking the brand on the piston and liner was "Speed Pro", but that was many years ago.
  10. Primary fuel was Red, Secondary fuel was Green, other filters are dark gray. You can still get the service kits. I have service kits of the two and three filter kits, with and without the coolant filters.
  11. Not picking on the trucks at all although I strongly prefer a 4070 over a 9670 series. Learned to drive in a 4070A after grandpa threatened to "kick my ass up between my shoulder blades" cause I couldn't get the rhythm down for shifting a duplex in one of the Mack's consistently or should I say "as he thought". In hindsight me thinks he just liked to pick on me.
  12. And before them is was the Pumpkin trucks of Schneider. Used to see cabover IH's in the ditch, woods, lakes, rivers, etc. just about everyplace they weren't designed to go.
  13. Stay away from those cheaper rubber blocks. They start giving out almost immediately. Go with a name brand like Dayton, Euclid, or a few others as they still have some quality standards left.
  14. Good pads and I've installed many. Ride quality on camelback is rough any way it's looked at but the Atro pads will far outlast the original rubber many times. Three to four in my estimation. They are what I'll install in mine when time.
  15. Those are the ones I purchase. Always good quality. Cost a little more up front but the payback in years of service is worth the cost I've found.
  16. I did a bit of welding at the Borden chemical plant in Illiopolis, IL back in the late 1970's of which that division was sold off in later years. I think they made parts of adhesive there but not really certain. Just down the road was the WWII bomb making complex and the two were built at the same time during that turmultuous event.
  17. Dairy and cattle farms used to be very commonplace around here too. Not many left and certainly not many "family" type operations.

  19. All good now. Had to adjust the D2 governor a couple of times to set pressures correct but it readily unloads properly now. Ran a steady 80mph on one of my favorite back roads and governor holds right at 120psi. Truck is pretty stable at speed too so tire balance must still be acceptable. Of course it is an R model after all so who would expect less.....

    I had seen that earlier. Not a bad price at all if you need it. Mine fortunately are in good shape but will be rechromed to brighten them up.

  25. I have no experience at all with an RGN that is ground bearing. Only one I really ever used was a NGB Talbert 50t unit and I borrowed it a few times to move my 780 Case backhoe. Nice one to operate for sure but far more $$$ than I need to expend on a start up type operation. If I'm thinking right; those bridges or bolsters really should have a way to ventilate themselves besides a big rust hole. I don't know but every one of them likes to rust through in that area. I'm on the "one payment" method of doing things so if anybody wants to talk turkey, I'll be listening. This is a new venture for me and thankfully I'm not completely green so hope to sound intelligent, (at least). I'll plead my case and give a vendor the chance to reduce their asking price to my liking, (whatever that is) or walk away clean. Pretty easy to convey a price is too high and it gives a second chance for a submital. That's just good business and fair to both parties I feel. So far I have six candidates to evaluate. Four are listed in "Truck Paper", and two are private owned. I'll look at all while driving the car and run back out in the R model to grab whatever is purchased to bring back. Sounds like Martin treated you right as that trailer is very nice and I hope it serves you well. Thanks for the tip(s); certainly appreciated.
