The Mac tools salesman that I had at the shop made it clear that he would be ceasing operations three months prior to ensure all of his customers were taken care of. I really don't have a lot of Mac tools myself any longer, but the few that needed attention, he made damn sure were taken care of. We repainted his van, then sold it to a worthwhile charity, (dirt cheap) and have not looked back. I guess it was a tough way to make a living. Rob

Hi Herb, I've sent you a couple of pm's about my brake progress but they have not been seen as per the status of the message? I guess your notification is not working? I finally got everything back together and appreciate the help and guidance. I am leaning on the short shank wrench myself. I am just concerned about the use of an extension with it. Thanks, Rob

Been thinking, (dangerous thing you know) and I really need to get this impact thing finished up. You guys that do a lot more wrenching on trucks than I do can prolly answer this unbiased: I'm going to purchase one of the impacts in the link below. I don't know if I should get the extended drive anvil or not. I have a 1" CP drive wrench for taking the tires and wheels off a truck, but this new wrench would probably do the same thing. I've never used a 3/4" extension on an impact with this much torque available, and even a 1/2" wrench when used through an extension can get wobbly with a loss of torque. My question is pretty straightforward: Do I need to purchase the extended anvil or not and what are the pros and cons besides the length? Thanks, Rob http://www.maxtool.com/product/search.asp?mdb=\tools.mdb,tbl=IC_ITEMS,template=/3_ir.htm,DBCOMP=ABS,dbsort=retail,ReturnMax=25,DB_CAT2=IRImpTQt Wrenches I'm interested in are the last two at bottom.

I found that suit to be too warm in the sun so I cut the crotch out for ventilation since there is nothing left to protect. Rob

I actually knew what you meant. Just had to have a little fun. Shame on me. Wait a minute, I'm shameless. Rob

Actually if you "flash sear" the fur in bacon grease, you can slide the meat from the hyde like an oyster!! Delicious I might ad. Rob

Sign me up too. It's getting cold around here and I don't want to spend the winter on the streetcorner with my hand out mumbling. Rob

That's BS Years ago when I sometimes used unsavory language, I often used the expression "Bull S***." As I grew up a bit and discovered it was not necessary to use such crude language, that expression became "BS." What did I really mean when I used those expressions? I meant that something was ridiculous, or idiotic or a half truth or just stupid. It covered any number of negative formats. The dictionary defines it as: nonsense; especially: foolish insolent talk... I have decided that I no longer will use either of those expressions in the future. When I have a need to express such feelings, I will use the word "Pelosi." Let me use it in a sentence. "That's just a bunch of Pelosi.." I encourage you to do the same. It is such a nasty sounding word, it really packs a punch, we are no longer being vulgar, and it clearly expresses our feelings. If enough of us use it, perhaps the word could be entered into the dictionary. When on a ranch watch your step and don't step in Pelosi. It will get on the bottom of your boot and won't go away until next election. What a fitting and descriptive legacy for the Speaker of the House! PASS IT ON TO AT LEAST 10,000,000 PEOPLE. DO NOT BREAK THIS CHAIN OR YOU WILL GET MORE PELOSI THAN YOU CAN SHAKE A BULL AT. Rob

Looking For Info On L T Macks
Rob replied to jake's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I have three trucks that have more than one plant, or dealer doing conversions prior to the owner taking possession: My A-40H was sold new in Los Angeles, but configured in both San Diego, and Portland. As built this truck was a single axle, single axle straight truck with a five speed transmission and air brakes. It was shipped to Portland for installation of another five speed, brownie, and tandem axle with a full outside fishplate added. The truck was originall double frame. All of this is documented on Mack stationary before the first owner, (Cora Stone), took possession. I purchased the truck from the original owner's estate, and the son stated it had always been a dump truck. Rob -
Grant, I snapped photos on both sides of the truck for comparison and left the camera at the shop. I'll get by later today and post but there will be a delay. Sorry about that. Rob

About $3.00 a mile is what I was quoted the last time I asked and did not take the quote. Went after the truck myself. Depending on length you may be able to catch a back haul which would reduce the price somewhat. Best bet would be to find a "hot shot" rig that is looking for a return load. Some of those guys will treat you right. Rob

A light snack for ole Rob this afternoon thanks to Mr. Hawk. Quite Juicy too. Take a close look at rodent, "The other white meat". Rob

I have a 1" CP wrench but it is so heavy I don't like to use it except for tires. My good 1/2" and the new 3/4 inch should take care of anything I'll come across. Rob

They do not come apart. From the back of the gauge to the temperature sending bulb is one piece. If you break it, it is garbage. Rob

Which power divider? Is it Mack's automatic one, (does not require air), or an air shifter power divided? The Mack automatic power divider works well when in good shape but will only keep about 75-80% of driveline torque and keep the differentials together before breaking over. An air locked power divider does not slip until something breaks but should not be left engaged on a solid surface such as asphalt, or concrete roadways where there would be hardly any tire slippage. I'll be at the shop tonight and will tilt the hood and snap photo of the cab mounting area for you. It is currently 8:30 am here and it will be close to 5:00 before I can post the photos so you have a reference. I have round tanks on my truck but the front tank mount recesses into the front of the tank. Rob

Steering Question
Rob replied to zlawson's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
A lot of trucks had the toggle switch on the dash to shut the air to the torque link when on the road. My 74 RL has it and works great. I do prefer manual steering on the road but power sure is nice to jockey around with. It is not nearly as smooth in operation as a hydraulic system. As an example: If you are sitting still and start to turn the wheels, you initially hit a resistance and then just a short second later the effort to turn the wheels is reduced. This is from air pressure building on one side of the assist cylinder, and the other side exhausting through the torque valve. It takes time for the air to travel through the lines to the cylinder. With a hydraulic assist, there is no exhaust and you are only displacing fluid so no delay. Rob -
We don't have any representation of Cornwell tools in this area and the Mac truck is outrageous in prices although the warranty is great. I've used Mac, and Snap-on for many years but the Snap man is an ass, (in these parts) so I don't use him. Rob

How Hard Is It To Replace Upper And Lower Insulator Pads
Rob replied to macattack's topic in Driveline and Suspension
As mentioned it's not awful if ther right tools are at hand. Most time you need to resort to heating to get things loose. Use new bolts/hardware when you put it back together. Rob -
My socket set came in this afternoon and I'm impressed. It is the Grey Pneumatic brand and all are six point impact sockets in a really nice form fitted plastic case that latches securely. These things rival what Mac, and Snap-on market in quality. The set goes from 3/4" to 2.5". I'm happy. Now I am going to purchase an IR-2161XP impact wrench, and manual ratchet/extension set, (next months allowance) to round out the set. Thanks for the help. Rob

Nothing to be ashamed of being black, white, yellow, or any other color, or ethnicity there is in the world. A person is only as good as they want to be. I for one am sorry stereotyping, and discrimination still plays in this country, but it does. I think the NAACP has outlived it's usefullness in this country. We are in a "dog eat dog" type atmosphere but a young black man still has a more difficult time obtaining useful employment than does his white counterpart. This is sad when the phrase "All men are created equal" is evaluated, as it is not adhered to well. When I had employees in my shop I had more difficulty keeping a young white man producing, than an older black man that was in my employ. You are correct in your analysis of the NAACP trying to further their own cause. This has been true from the beginning of their existence, however, the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and others have made a mockery of the fundamentals of their establishment. Anymore if a black man is pulled over for speeding in his car, it is "racial profiling" thanks to them. Again you have no reason to see shame in your skin color. Character is what makes, or breaks an individual. Sometimes a person needs to go a little "extra distance" to remain separated from the normal, or what is popular, but a hard charging, fair individual will go as far as their initiative allows. I was always outspoken, loud, foul, (imagine that), but tried to be fair, and I've done alright. Keep the faith, friend. Rob
