  1. Real consistent to how they usually come out. Glad you were able to get the perimeter screws out of the hub too. I've had to drill several of them which snapped off clean.

  3. It used to be common. Not so many are truly mechanical in operation any longer however as many use an electrical driven pump.
  4. If you were to Sounds as if the lift pump needs rebuilt. Either has a seal compromised or a valve no longer making a good seal internally.
  5. That is exactly what they are. Concrete shelters for blast containment actually. They were prevalent in the country during WWII. Usually close to a hard road or rail line.
  6. There is a guy about two miles from me with three of them restored and one original, (nice) along with three parts vehicles. Most are the "Greenbriar" package which was very upscale for the time. He also has a "Monza" hardtop with twin turbochargers and it's a real scooter. Current project is a convertible car but I've only seen it from a distance and it's being rebuilt/restored to be driven. I'm sure old Ralph would have a conniption if he came around.
  7. The AD-9 series is newer than the AD-4. There is less hardware and disassembly with the element being less expensive than the AD-4 series also. IIRC the AD-9 has a better heater or thermostat along with bottom purge plate incorporated but I've not had problems with either myself. I tend to change elements every two years in the pre winter service timeframe using only genuine Bendix or Haldex reman filter cartridges. The newer styles with the spin on cartridges are even easier yet but they are a bit expensive to acquire. I've also replaced two myself that were leaking; one cracked housing and the other from the purge valve not sealing and not serviceable. Simpler is not always better.
  8. I have a couple AD-4, and AD-9 series in the shop for project trucks. Couple of mine still have AD-2 series dryers and they all work well. I pick the service kits up during sales so they're ready to go.
  9. Mack still supports the old gasket types? They are the only place I've been able to get V8 gaskets for sure for the 865/866 series.

  11. Still do use alcohol. It keeps things from freezing in the winter but the tanks still corrode from the moisture laden air. The air dryer helps with both freeze ups and moisture content reduction. If maintained very little oil gets past the media that causes sludge downstream too.

  14. Don't think I've ever seen one of those rebuilt myself. Everybody readily converts to the 18 speed. My PAI book doesn't show a rebuild kit available through them.
  15. Those problematic ones I use a "Carter" electric fuel pump. It has enough pressure to unseat the fuel gallery pressure regulator and return fuel to tank. Hardest part is plumbing it into the system before the lift pump.
  16. Sounds like the suction line is compromised meaning a small air leak such as a pinhole. I don't section lines or put new fittings on old but rather replace wholesale. No comebacks that way.
  17. Yup, don't trust those Bendix D2 knockoff's. Seen several either not make initial testing, or fail shortly afterward.
  18. If the engine is original it will have the smaller head studs than the later larger studs in the corners. I think the earlier engines used 20 5/8" head studs and the later engines used 16 5/8" studs and two 3/4" studs in the corners of the heads. That however is from memory. I like a composition type head gasket myself which is sometimes referred to as a "sandwich" type. No idea to a part number as need to know the stud count first. The gaskets are NOT interchangeable between engines. Finding a gasket on the shelf for the older style can be a challenge also as they have been an extinct routine part number over 40 years I know of. Olsen's gaskets can make you one however and they have an online presence now.
  19. Another side benefit is your air receivers, (tanks) last much longer when an air dryer is incorporated as very little moisture vapor gets to the tanks if the maintenance is kept up on the dryer.

  21. The air compressor problem was just last year. Went through 3 before getting a good one.

  23. Buddy is running a 2001 Vision with an E7-427 purchased with 517K well maintained miles on the clock and just turned 1.1M yesterday. Only problem he has had is the air compressor with two ReMack compressors being bad, and a/c compressor filling the system with trash. I flushed that well, installed new parts and it's fine the past two seasons now. He did take an "owl" to the grille and it busted the condensor so it too was replaced. Truck uses two gallons of oil between 10K oil changes routinely and has some minor electrical issues along with broken plastic interior parts. He is very good with routine maintenance tasks with plenty of grease being used on moving parts. We changed the Fuller FRO-15210 trans to an RTLO-16918B early on and it's been a very nice power train option. I'll model a replacement for my R-612ST on it's platform, but I want a set forward axle. There is another guy here that runs a late 1990's, (my guess) Western Star with a Detroit engine which is very trouble free after a complete engine rebuild. He purchased the truck with the tired engine knowing a rebuild was in the close future. His dad has been a heavy truck mechanic over 50 years so they knew what to do. This truck is a real "looker" being very clean and meticulously maintained with a good combination of chrome, aluminum, and pinstripes over a black base.
  24. A guy is in business to be profitable and it's not so easy with the newer engines installed into Mack from what I read.
  25. Does nothing for me either. I do like the gray base color however, but far too much additional on the tractor for my tastes.
