Most I see are just painted. The best thing to do is power wash the area clean to keep the road wash cleared that builds up, holds water, and rots everything in the area. Wash it with the truck and greasing the fifth wheel platter at the same sitting.

Most of the inline six Mack diesel engines I've pulled are right at 1950-2000# when near fully dressed. Pulling from a CF is going to be a challenge without an overhead hoist to not bang anything up during the extraction or install. I use a Gantry Crane with about 14' under hook height. The gantry is about 18' in width so an engine is picked, slid over, then set on a pallet, cradle, or truck bed for the next operation(s). I suppose a forklift with a side shift mast would work also but I've never done it this way. I assume you are pulling an EN-707 series engine. If going to a diesel there are a few to avoid in the application like just about any END-711 if staying with Mack. Assuming you want to stay with a Mack engine a good selection would be near any early 70's ENDT-675, ENDT-676, or most any E6 series of the early 80's. If you plan to incorporate air to air CAC, you have a lot more options for power upgrades. Regardless, step up the cooling capacity as you really need to get the heat out of the heads and a heavy multi row radiator core is the way to do it best. Airflow is somewhat impeded in that chassis design so could use help, (IMO).

Should have a shuttle relay valve plumbed into the intake manifold also. I would disconnect and plug the port in the manifold disallowing operation of the unit which only serves to limit fuel rack travel inside the injection pump till boost pressure elevates. If still no smoke from a "Maxidyne" engine with this disconnected, there is either high wear in the plungers/barrels, or the governor is not operating correctly. Both require disassembly of the injection pump to correct. It should smoke like a banshee if the engine is getting enough fuel. Lack of smoke equates to lack of fuel. -
I could use a pair of steer axle drums for my 80 R model. It has 15" "T" series brakes. Truck is buried in ice so will be a few days to get drum numbers if needed. Thanks, Rob

There are some variances still. My 1960 has more than a single hole, (seems like three) in the xmember and still has fuses. Pretty certain the 61 has fuses also but not certain. Never have had the sheet metal off this one. Both have the wiper motors under the dash. I know neither truck has ever been wrecked and both came from the same fleet in Texas sold new in Ft. Worth running reefer boxes. I had to recore the radiator in the 1960 truck and it was the old style everything so a lot of fun with 50 year old grunge built up but not a lot of rust to contend with. -
You will need a pair of group "31" top post batteries, a pair of "Flag" terminals, (sometimes referred to a "Tee" terminals, and couple lengths of at least 2/0 welding cable, (SOOW series) an intermittent duty magnetic switch, (starter solenoid) and some minor interconnecting wiring and terminal ends. As mentioned interconnect the batteries in a parallel configuration, ( + to +, and - to -). The starter motor itself is not polarity sensitive but the starter solenoid mounted to either a 40MT, 42MT, or 39MT series is. They are readily available in either polarity. If retaining your original generator the system should be positive ground and unless you want a bit more work, I'd leave it that way but it's easy enough to change to negative ground for modern convenience items also. Do not skip installing a second magnetic switch to pull the main starter solenoid in which is physically mounted to the starter motor as the push button in the cab is not designed to handle the current needed. Also, I've seen not one, but two replacement 39MT starters go defective on a hobby truck from lack of use over winter months. Both of these were Chinese "knock offs" of Remy branded starters of which I've never really seen problems from. They weigh about 1/2 of what a good 40MT starter does but the 40MT has been around for many a year and are very much worth rebuild. A 39MT is not and is a replacement item when it goes bad. Just experience talking, not bias. If it were me, I'd acquire a fresh 40MT starter with an 11 tooth drive gear, a good pair of 950CCA starting batteries, necessary cables and interconnecting terminations, change to negative ground swapping out the generator with a later model alternator from a large truck, (Delco-Remy 25SI series are cheap, reliable, and rugged) and be done with it. You'll never look back. Rob

Yes, remember quite well but don't get through your area any longer. My son moved from Warrenville over to Wheaton and much easier to get there via I-355 than over 20. Still plan to stop for a visit sometime. Got to get into that crate sometime come to think about it.....

Best I can tell 1962 was the first year where near every truck leaving Plainfield had the later style shell. I have both a 1960, and a 1961 B series which have the older style shell and trucks are both known from new to have original sheet metal installed/as built. Not doubting your knowledge, just know there were variances which is probably exhaustion of parts stock(s). -
I'm on a new tablet computer and everything is different with it but don't notice the site being difficult to navigate. I have fat fingers and the keys are to small to my liking but can be worked with. Just surprising how many don't seem to be around any longer. I know Facebook has had a negative impact on a lot of comradery based websites but it's never been something I'm interested in. I see kids putting far to many personal aspects of life onto "their" Facebook of which most any predator can see. Had to caution my daughter several times till she locked down her account from public view. She still puts far to much on there IMO. "Momma"and I never expressesed interest in that interface and prefer to remain private from the masses. Amazing how many I know do participate or how large of contributor it is to their lives. So can see how most specialty sites such as this have suffered. "Momma's" special stew really does work. She doesn't allow me in the cellar while she prepares the potion but just about 20 minutes after eating and getting myself upright again, she orders me to the outside of the house perimeter foundation cause you know, "where Rob goes, nuthin grows" so we finally got that weed control problem addressed too. One spot treated seems to be permanent in nature. You all remember how "into" organics I am so this fits right in. Just have to be careful where to step around the place the longer we're here.

Yes Greg, I'm old n gray and have diminished mental capacity from my youth but I can still crawl to my food bowl for supper without delay, so it's all good. I'm still working on the loose bowel thing but continue to make progress with "Momma's" special stew. While many consider me feeble n decrepit, I still try..... I know how software changes and it's not always easy on membership as I see it a lot at work. From the roster it looks like the exodus was around the November timeframe. I don' do Facebook myself and don't plan to.

Kind of surprising to look through membership roster to see it's been quite some time since a lot of the old guard have posted. Some kind of change to the site? Run it's course? Tired of answering same questions over and over for members only on the "take"? All aforementioned apply to me as well but I'm not finding, nor placing blame, just wondering why the departure for others? Thanks, Rob

The 1962 model year brought a slight redesign to the grille shell allowing it's removal w/o removing the headlamp panels. The giveaway is the two bolts through the bottom crossbar for retention of the grille shell as the side "wings" which bolt under the h/l panels are removed. -
Evening and Merry Christmas everybody. Can't stay too long as I must get back to digging splinters out of "Momma's" ass cheeks after she plopped down on the toilet and the floor gave yield wedging her hips in the rough sawn wooden floor joists. Had to string up a come-a-long to winch her out of the encumbrance so the real work could begin. Man that woman can shout some obscenities. The joys of being married to a girl tipping the scales at 297........ Twinkies are getting scarce around these parts so don't know how I'll get through the next year without a serious buyout of the brand Cya, Rob.

Yes, it is true. All good things must come to an end as does my involvement with the BMT site on a regular basis. I am proud of the part I have played in developing this site from it's humble beginnings, to what it has become. The site has given each and every one of you a place to gather, solve problems, help with projects, have fun, laugh, and forget about reality for a while. It is however time for me to move along to other projects and interests in life. I wish you green pastures, fair skies, and dry roads ahead. Thanks for the memories. Rob

Seen one of those setups on a "Nussbaum" freight truck Friday just beat all to hell. I think the driver forgot it was there when backing into a dock. The trailer was damaged also.Rob

Once you get used to them they are not bad if you are running a dump truck. With a tractor or straight truck, I would rather have a 5th wheel, or gooseneck setup.Rob
