DWaits replied to RomaineLettuce's topic in Fire Apparatus
Check out the advertising section of spaamfaa.org, lots of Macks listed there, also they show up on Ebay from time to time. If you are serious about getting a fire engine consider joining spaamfaa, it is a great orginization for fire engine collectors. David -
Calling All Mack E Model Owners
DWaits replied to Andy Wright's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Andy, Did you receive the copy of the E manual I sent you? David -
I do not know about other brand of trucks but, has anyone seen anything that comes close to the parts that Watts has in the B model store? if they have let me know, it looks like the B is the king as far as available reproduction parts and Watts is the only place I know of that has that much of it! I have been a ATHS member for two years now and been using the ATHS board for about four years now. I have made some good friends a ATHS, Two from England that have come to the US for a vist have even stayed at my house, One from Kuwait who shares pretty much the same political views that I have, (we talk politics thru Email and never on the board) and another from Arizona who has taken the time to call me on the phone many times and walk me thru some engine and drive train problems I have had in the past. Many others on the ATHS board have helped me and have given me advice and shared their knowlage. But, I do agree there are some there that make me think everytime I post something about my Mack is "what kind of put down will I get from this?" It gets old really quick! I post more here but I like to think both boards have their advantage, I like both groups of people, I think a large group of us here are ATHS members and everyone gets along fine, you will always have one or two people in a group that have to act like the class clown, it's kinda funny at first but after a while you gotta think why they are beatin that horse, it died a long time ago. I posted this on the ATHS site, I know some of us here also have Powerstroke engines so maybe this will help somebody. early last week I had a diesel smell in in the cab if of my F250 Super Duty, It would come and go for about 4 days. Saturday AM I crawled all over the Powerestroke engine looking for a fuel leak, I could not find any signs of a leak untill I pulled the fuel filter cover off and noticed a small puddle of fuel in the valley between the heads. I got back down off the engine and started it up and with a flashlight I found that the water seperator drain was leaking pretty good! I shut the engine down and got out my Torx drivers (#20) and tightend up the housing on the drain. I did not drive the truck much last weekend, only about 15 miles to move some hay, Tuesday AM I noticed the smell was back and so I went online to thedieselstop.com and found a thread where A LOT of other Powerstoke owners are having this same problem! It seems to be the consensus that the ULSD is eating the factory O rings in the drain! Ford wanted $48 for a rebuiled kit but I found a fellow that would sell me just the O rings for $5 and that includes shipping! One of the techs who frequint thedieselstop.com posted that over the last two years they had installed two sets and since the ULSD has come out they have installed over 75! the O rings I am getting are Viton orange 75, they are supposed to be impervious to the new ULSD. I sent my pump to them, they were not able to rebuild it but they took the time to call me twice and let me know what was going on. If I had to get another pump rebuilt I would still send it to them, they are really easy to deal with! David

I like the desert, it is showing up as a light tan on my computer here at work. Almost all the other forums I use that use this same program use blue. The desert is a nice change. I use Firefox, it is so much easyer to use and it blocks 99.9% of all pop ups, the only problem I have with it is the header on this board, it looks like the header is overlayed on top of another header but, if that is the only problem it's no big deal for me! E Model Help
DWaits replied to Andy Wright's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Hello Andy, I got your messages, I will try and start scanning the manual Monday and send it to you a few pages at a time as I get them done. I will send them to you in PDF format. The thing that draws me to the E's are the huge fenders and the small interior of the cab, really smooth lines on those trucks! I have seen pictures of Bob's truck as well as Lee Haberleens from the ATHS as well, there are two others in the 2005 Showtime on page 95, I have not seen the 2006 Showtime yet. I Emailed the owner of the Mack pumper in Florida, maybe this will work out for both of us! He had it listed as an L model but I am certian it is an S series pumper, I made the same mistake when I first got my pumper, I thought it was an L untill I learned more about the truck and found it was in fact an S which is based on the E series chassis and body. Good luck with your search for an E down under! David -
Do you have any pictures of the motor? I am intersted in this truck, it is only about 6 hours away from me but I can not make a commitment until close to the end of the month. If you still have it then I would like to drive down and take a look at it. David

E Model Help
DWaits replied to Andy Wright's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Andy, I posted a reply to your question on the ATHS board but I thought I would add something to it here. The S-75 pumper I have is based on the E chassis and uses the same cab, fenders, hood, dash and cowl. The biggest dawback to collecting and or restoreing one is that the parts are really hard to find but they are out there. Almost all of the ones I have seen that have been restored have had a price of 10,000 and up, some of the parts that were used on some early B's (only a few!) can be used on the E. As I stated on the ATHS board, I can scan my E series manual or copy it for you if you would like it. I also have a ton of pics of my S-75 in various stages of restoration if you would like them. I will try and answer any questions you have about them if I am able. To me the E was one of the best looking trucks of the late 30's and 1940's I would really like to have a E tractor for pulling my trailers around but they are extremly hard to find here in Georgia! Macks On The Big And Little Screen
DWaits replied to Andy Wright's topic in Mack on the Silver Screen
GoodFellas. with DeNiro has a B-61 in it, I think it might even have had another B in another scene but it has been awhile since I have seen the movie. Also there was a B open cab pumper in the Tom Selik movie Folk's David -
Thanks for the part numbers, I forgot to tell you that you can get your gaskets from Olson's. I got all of the gaskets that I could not make from them, they even sent my first order to me with a bill so I could mail them a check when the gaskets got here. If they do not have what you need they can make them for you, mine were NOS with Mack factory part numbers and in very good shape. send them a Email with what you need and they will get back to you very quick with prices and shipping cost. I do not have a source for bearings because my 510 uses babitts! I wish it did use bearin. you could probably get a bearing shop to match up with the ones you have. David

Charlie, On page 61 of the latest WOT there is an ad in the bottom right corner, the ad says they have rings for some of the post war Mack gassers, is the 707 gas? Also if you know what size rings you need you can cross match them on the Hastings web site, that is where I found the rings for my ENF510A, Hastings is very helpfull, Emailed them and they help me find what I needed. Twostick, Can you send me some pics of your spin on conversion? I only have one filter and have been wanting to change over to the spin on type, now would be a good time to do it since I have everything removed from my block right now. Thanks! DW

Cooling System Questions - 1948 Thermodyne.
DWaits replied to rigfire's topic in Engine and Transmission
I am not exactly sure what it does but it is some sort of pressure relief line, I am thinking for when the system is shut of from the radiator maybe. Yes mine does have two coils and distributors. I saw your post on burning up the points and coils, go over to the ATHS board at aths.org and log on to the disscusion page, there are lots of guys on that board that can give you faster answers to some of your questions. This forum (BMT) has a great bunch of guys on it but for questions about trucks and engines as old as ours the guys at ATHS are better at answering questions about the older engines. David -
What did you do with or get done with your Mack this weekend? Myself, I removed the front head on my ENF510A engine in my 48 S-75 pumper, I started on it early Saturday morning. Out of 30 nuts holding the exhaust/intake manifolds on only one gave me a problem, I soaked it with PB Blaster took a short break and went back at the frozen nut with a wrench and the smallest ballpeen hammer I had. After tapping on it for a few minutes it brook loose and I had both manifolds loose, I had to cut the four bolts holding the exhaust pipe to the flange. Next I pulled the rocker assymbly and then removed all the nuts holding the head to the block, 10 of the studs came out with the nuts but two studs did not budge, not wanting to risk snapping them I just removed the nuts and decided to lift the head up over them. This head must weigh at least 150 pounds! standing on the frame I managed to get it above the studs and turned cross ways so I could set it back down on the block, lifting that head from cheast height was a job! Getting it down on the floor was even harder. The next head will come off with an engine host! After taking a long look at the block, head and cylinders I filled all three cylinders with PB Blaster, My number 1 cylinder is stuck so it will sit most of the week. Sunday I cleaned up the shop area and that was pretty much it as far as my Mack goes, Lets hear from some of the others about what they got done on their Mack or what you did with it. David

Cooling System Questions - 1948 Thermodyne.
DWaits replied to rigfire's topic in Engine and Transmission
Donny, I think I may have told you wrong on where the line goes. If it is what twostick described above I do have that line on my engine but it is rubber, on down the radiator line coming out of the pump is what I thought you were asking about and it is what I described to you as being plugged. I will take a picture of it when I get back home after work. David Is this the line you are asking about? If then it is what Twostick told you. -
Cooling System Questions - 1948 Thermodyne.
DWaits replied to rigfire's topic in Engine and Transmission
The ENF510A has only one thermostat according to my manual, I still do not know where the line goes from the water pump, I have one more book to check. My wife cleaned up my desk so I have to track it down, as soon as I find it I will get back to you, it has some very good detailed drawings of the Mack engines. Enjoy your day working on your truck! Cooling System Questions - 1948 Thermodyne.
DWaits replied to rigfire's topic in Engine and Transmission
Donny, Try NAPA and see if they can match up the cap and thermostat, I do not know if there are one or two but my guess is there is only one. I do not know what the line from the water pump is for, my first guess is that it may be for the aux. cooling that helps keep the engine cool on extended pumping but, that is supposed to be a closed sysytem and does not mix with the cooling water. The water pump on my truck did not have one but had a plug in place, when I replaced the pump the seconed one had the line but it was crimped and I replaced the fitting with a new plug. The replacment pump did not come from an fire engine, it came off and L series road tractor so whatever it is for is not fire engine related, I will look at my manuals and books tonight and see what I can find out for you. What type of info are you looking for? Do you have any pictures of this truck you can post? David

Tell your son we said thanks for what he is doing! I would be going over myself if they took 46 year old recruits. Get a good relationship with the Mack guys if you can, you never know what they can help you with. I am pretty sure our trucks were made close togather, Mack used consecutive numbers off the line but sime trucks sat at the plant untill they had an order for them, one thing I found out is that they could have been built a few years before 48 and they used the order date ast the year, IE: built in 46 or 47 but they had no order for it untill 48 so it went out as a 48. Mack started their seriel numbers with 1000 so your would have been the 1365 truck built. The Museum stays really busy, I have heard it has taken as long as two months for the info to get back but it is really worth the wait. David

I am going with the school bus, for some reason that guy looks like he would think a school bus would be cool to drive with a DT-466. David
