  1. Funny you should metion that, there was a sign at the Cumberland Farms, milk $4.00 a gallon, right above it, diesel $4.16 a gallon, just seems there is alot more work in a gallon of milk?
  2. I had a Freightliner SD dump with heavy rears and heavy air suspension. The truck worked great. I have seen air ride dump trucks with lighter suspension in front of me going down winding roads that I let off thinking they were going to roll. 40 suspenion on up works good,46 great, and you can dump the bags when dumping.8LL is a dump truck transmission, it give you a a low hole to take off on steep grades and a couple reverse gears, one very low that will save clutches and nerves. They really are a 9 speed since you don't go back to the low hole and don't need it to take off empty or on flat ground if loaded and have low enough rears. They make a 8LL OD and a 8LL the OD has a U pattern,4th where 3rd should be and 3rd where 4th should be, the std 8LL is just an H pattern. I would get a trans with a low reverse option and a low hole since a dump truck you are going to be off road and will be backing in bad spots and backing a long ways.. Even an 18 spd is just an 8LL with a splitter, you don't need to shift 18 or even all 8. As far as chatter when backing up, with my rears locked and a RD688 with camel back rears locked, I could back up loose hills further and smoother, the camel back would hop, and the empty ride, you will praise the airbag gods.
  3. There is a huge old I believe Airforce base up there. It is pretty much shut down, they rebuild Hum V's tanks and military equipment there now. I've hauled tanks out of there in the winter to port in Maryland. I bet thats the place, was a cold war station, closest to europe I guess. Maybe to protect the east coast since it's furthest east.

  6. What a handsom pup, I don't know if I dare send a picture to my daughter or not!!! Sure is a cute little bugger.
  7. It's too bad you can't get a Cummins in a Mack in the U.S. when they can down under. Australia has new Superliners, they have Titans with 625 Cummins 2250 torque, Mack would sell alot more trucks if they would put an engine in them here. I've got a CXN613 with a 12" frame,46 rears,14600 front, fuller 18 spd,4:30 ratio 70 ton Holland fifth wheel, really comfotable, great sleeper with fridge, big bed, microwave, aux heat, has it all, but a Cummins would be the Cats a$$, I saw that wrecked PELLETIER truck at the Mack garage in Bangor. I delivered them a new harvester with my Pete on a lowboy, 83 feet long, the trailer was 9'6" wide, the machine maybe 11'wide, didn't know the camera crew was going to be there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tq9h5BClpU
  8. Thanks gentlemen, got her home Tuesday eve, ran great, well behaved on the road. I like the ride and the room inside. The Pete was nice to drive and loaded with pulling power but was kinda small when you live on the road for long. Got a little tinkering to do, it has a espar heater for the engine with a 7 day selectable auto start, nothing there, no power to the controll pad, maybe a fuse, also one for bunk heat, it clicks like it's pumping fuel and grey smoke, cold, comes out from the exhaust for a minute or so then it shuts down. Sounds like the glow plug not igniting the fuel. Makes it hard when you have all these new switches and dials and no manuals on the truck or accesories. If anyone has a pdf on the heaters and or a pdf on the dash controlls of the 2005 cxn 613 let me know. Thanks again,Mark
  9. I have had colors matched and mixed at NAPA and they put it in a spray can.Take a chip in or the part and they put it under the computer scan. As others say, nice for small parts, but at $20.00 a can, you could buy a compessor,a gun and the paint for what it would cost to paint a cab.
  10. You are probably being facetious, and I don't blame you. I sold the Pete because I wasn't making it and didn't have time to look for other avenues of income. I know trucking isn't the place to look. After letting spring and summer roll by, (the good weather for heavy haul) I decided I needed to get back into it. The Mack seemed to have it all as far as set up,hp,46 rears with 4:30's and a 18 spd, plenty of room for on the road living, and for the milage 420k, the year and the care it had it seemed the best buy out there. I have allready heard that 460's aren't good but I checked the Mack garage prior and it was the late 90's, by 2005 it was a pretty good motor(cross fingers here). We will see, this is the make it or break it move.
  11. Headed to NY Monday am to pick her up Tuesday, 2005 Mack CXN613, 12"x3/8"+ frame, 460 hp, 18 spd fuller, 14600 front, 46 rears, 70 ton Holland fifth wheel, wet system, headache rack, two tool box steps one big tool box, stainless fenders, strobes, flag holders,Espar cab heater and Espar engine heater, both with remote timers so she's warm when I get there, no cold starts,8- 315 22.5 on rear,4 way lockers, 275 22.5 front, 72" sleeper loaded. Hope it all works out as good or better then the Pete, check her out on the other trucks forum, out with the old, also on Youtube under ihop54, got more to post with her and I hope a few years of heavy haul with the Mack.
  12. Out with the old, in with the new, the Pete is a 2003 379, 525 Cat Fuller 10spd, 46 rears, 3:90 ratio, American Class interior, wet system. You can check it out on Youtube under ihop54 and see what it used to do, I have alot more to post on youtube as soon as I can pull the pictures off my old hard drive, some real good ones too. Check out her replacement on the newer model Mack forum, hope she will be as good as the Pete, so I can post a few years of heavy haul on line with her too.
  13. I have a pretty nice 69 and older Mack R hood, has those molded in mudflap look, after I believe 69 they went right down smooth, no indent. Also have the Mack script new, I believe I have the small Mack block letters for the front new, bulldog and base new, two horns that match my old 69r they are on one base, one a little smaller then the other, they have the same numbers on them as my old 69, they are new.., I'll have to look and see what else, a few nos owners manuals and used service manuals. Anyone interested email me, I think you can access it from here. Also my old light blue R Mack with a 9' dump is pictured on here somewhere, the hood is wrong but the horns are like the ones I have new. Got some old huge tires and I think rims, off the Mack, free if you live near Bangor Maine, let me know.
  14. Something I never understood, maybe too many people have a pashion for trucks. A new dump truck with body is from 90k to 135k fuel, well you know what that is, parts, just tires, 1200 a pair oil change 150, insurance, taxes, hourly repair 60 to 80 an hour. Around here the rate for owner opporated truck is 37 to 40 and hour, just can't be done. It has to be the love for trucking.
  15. As Rick said, screw in just in front of the starter, has a wide slot and you might want an air impact. I had to use an impact and a little heat around the hole. Screw in is pre 81 or 84 not sure, after that its expansion plug type. Be prepared to drain down alot 10 to 12 gallons of antifreeze in a large clean container so you can use it over. Might as well fix anything that leaks or might leak soon while it's drained down. I replaced my heater hose shut off while I was at it, it was dripping. The cost was 45.72 at the dealer. Well worth it. I think it is the most brutal thing you can do to a diesel is a very cold start. Hard on the starter, all the cold parts, and I can't see how it would throw oil when it is that cold.
  16. The trdxl107 and trdxl1071 are early transmissions. The 107 gives you a low for reverse and first the 1071 gives you a high range for fifth. The trxl is the newer transmission and it gives you a low hole for first and five reverses.
  17. I bought my 69 R600 # 4890,in Maine, from a friend this summer. He bought it used 7 years ago at Stateline Mack in Mass. It belonged to a paving company who had traded it in. It was ordered new in 68 as 1 of three, 4889,4890,mine,and 4891, all specked the same by a company in Conn. to haul oil tankers. The other day the same friend called me and said 4889 is on Ebay. I looked it up and it was a single axle dump as mine was turned into, it was still on the road and still working daily. I went to Mass. with intentions of buying it, drove it, smooth as silk and checked it out, nice but two to restore is too much. I asked the owner how long he had it. He said 7 years. He bought it at State line Mack a day before my friend bought his. Small world. What are the odds of 2 of the three 38 year old Macks still working? Is 4891 out there working? This I would love to know. If anyone knows how to find out, please let me know. By the way 4889 is on Ebay till Monday, look up 1969 Mack R 600 4889 to find it. 250 hp 20 spd nice Bibeau dump, engine brake and alot of goodies and so cheap for what you get.
