Hello Guys,

I am somewhat new to this forum and to Mack Trucks in general. My question is that: Do Mack trucks generally comes with Detroit or Cummins engines from the factory? I am talking of trucks from 1970 - 1995. I have seem some advertised with engines other than Mack engines. Are they installed afterwards by owners as a replacement or is it an option from the factory?

Thanks for your help.

Cummins, Detroit, and Cat engines were all available in Mack trucks from the factory during that time frame, if the truck was spec'ed with that brand of engine.

Indeed- I drove a '79 F-model with a 350 Cummins and 10 speed Roadranger.

Producer of poorly photo-chopped pictures since 1999.

Vendor components have always been available options on Mack trucks from the '40s up to current models. The model numbers will indicate the engine options if you familiarize yourself on what to look for.

Detroit !?!?!?! why would you do that to a :mack1: Truck ?

Back in the day plenty of fleets ran 8V71's and 8V92's. They allowed Macks to integrate into fleets that had other Detroit powered vehicles, simplifies maintenance costs. Also some owners were engine loyal and wanted to stick with what they knew or liked. Even into the 90's you could get Cummins, CAT or Detroits in a CL.

Today its either a red Volvo engine or nothing. The only engine I would ever care to see offered again is the E9. You just can beat that V8 sound.

What America needs is less bull and more Bulldog!

One or two years ago the Granite had cummins mostly in California but not now.

2010 TerraPro Low Entry and Cabover refuse models now are available

with heavy-duty natural gas engines. The 9-liter Cummins Westport

ISL G is rated at 320 hp, can use LNG or compressed natural gas

(CNG), and has a three-way catalytic converter.

To help clarify the issue, Mack designated models that could have vendor engines. There are models such as the CH and certain R models that were designed only for a Mack engine.

Yep!

Just trying to keep things simple.

Old guts know most of this stuff but some of the new guys may not.

Didn't think to add that:

"Mack designated models that could have vendor engines."

Good point!!!

And thanks

Keep a clutchin'

The Cummins 855 I-6 SC/BC's & 1150 I-6 KT's where some brutes and fairly reliable powerful engine's, I could see using those in a solid Mack truck . . .

Cat i don't really know so i don't comment on them except i think the 3208 210-225hp V8 was a pile and the only Cat i ever delt with . . .

Detroit i just never really liked but they sure sound cool rapping threw the gears at 3,200rpm's . . .

I personally have had Fantastic Luck with Cummins & Mack Diesel's, so that's what i'll use for diesel power :thumb:

I think they would just about build anything they could. But you got to think of it like this do you want a purebred bulldog or a mutt

  • 12 years later...

probably will, but you will probably have to make a wiring harness to adapt the computer and engine to work with the mack instrument cluster if it is a newer truck.

a friend has a 94 (i think)  CL700 with a 15 litre 600 cummins and 18 speed eaton fuller trans. .

when you are up to your armpits in alligators,

it is hard to remember you only came in to drain the swamp..

CL had longer hood as well to accommodate these bigger engines.

CL733 Cummins engine

CL753 Cat 😸 engine

CL743 Detroit engines...but these are rarer than a honest politician.

Also .. different frame

I can remember the first time I saw an R700 parked at our post plant loaded after getting in too late to be unloaded. The next morning the driver rides in with another truck and starts his Mack. The air starter first caught my attention but the buzzing of an 8V71 DD made me do a double take. That sound just seemed so strange coming from an R Model.

Back in the 90's We Could CH Select with Detroit Series 60s fitted & CL Select with CAT Power.

In the early 2000's We got ISX powered Superliners & Titans, But Once Volvo released the D16 they were Dropped..

In my view mack could pump out a few more vehicles with the Cummins diesel option. They have had a relationship with Cummins as far back as the 40's maybee 30's. Merry Christmas.

yrs back i  looked at a '39 mack FK chain drive that was originally powered by a cummins. unfortunately  i didn't buy it but should have

back in the day ;'70's  wasn't too unusual on the east coast to see a twin stack mack R700  DD powered. rackin the brain to be accurate , seems roadway had some.
