I already know how to drive a truck around the yard. I just never backed with a trailer or drove on the road ya know. At least I can get her in gear and get moving and at least stop the damn thing. :thumb: Just cause I never driven on the road doesn't mean I don't know how to drive her. :thumb:

you should get a lot of practice backing around the yard don't you, moving trailers around? looks like it would be a good place to get in some practice sometime.

I didn't move any trailers around. I did move some trailers around with a yard dog but never backed one up. I attempted it one time with a yard dog and couldn't do it. Too offset for my taste and plus it had armstrong steering. I did drop and hook trailers so I got that down pat with the tractors...Pete 379's, Mack CH613, Freightliner FLD 112/120's, Century Class, and Columbia's, and a couple International 9400 I've operated.

I'll give my unbiased review of each truck even though I never "drove" them but running them around the yard I got a chance to feel them out and see what I liked the disliked about them.

Freightliner FLD 112/120: I could sit with no air in the seat and see over the dash, very comfortable, driver friendly as far as switches were placed, the only thing I don't care for on the FLD's is the clutch seems a tad bit too high and depending on the truck very stiff but you get use to it. It felt like a truck everything felt solid. I've always liked the FLD's and in my opinion it was Freightliner's best truck besides the Classic XL

Freightliner Century Class/Columbia: I could sit with no air in the seat and see over the dash, like the FLD very comfortable, driver friendly except the fact if it had crank windows it was down at your knees which was aggravating to me. As far as the clutch goes I think they had the easy pedal clutch and it was very easy to use even if it was stiff. Also it didn't sit so high off the floor at all so that was a big plus for me being a short fella. I will say the Columbia is more of a company truck as far as gauges go, the Century Class had the gauge package where it was all separate and not in one cluster like the Columbia. The Century Class did have some computer info stuff where you could cycle through. You can order the Columbia with the independent gauge cluster but that was more of an owner operator feature. I do know both trucks have problems with the floor heating up from the transmission due to lack of insulation, I'm not sure if they improved on it when they changed somethings in 04 or not. Another problem with the early Century Class/Columbia's was the dash trim falling apart and the steering wheel plastic flaking off, along with on the door trim as well. It wasn't as solid built like the FLD. The years varied from 92-05/06. The new ones were my favorite! All had Eaton 10 spd, a couple of the Century Classes had Super 10's in them. There was on FLD that had a 9 spd with a weird shift pattern. The big hole was up against the dash. That really through me off as I never seen a shift pattern like that. I know that was common with a 15 spd.

Freightliner Cascadia: Even though I never been inside or drove one of them my biggest grip is the sleeper mounted CB antennas. That is one of the stupidest things ever.

Whoever at Freightliner thought it was a smart idea on the Century Class, Columbia, and Cascadia to integrate the CB/AM/FM into one antenna was a moron. There were several driver's who complained their radio wouldn't work right. Come to find out when they spliced or replaced the coax cable they ended up messing their AM/FM radio. That was a stupid move by Freightliner.

Mack CH613: This Mack CH had the square style dash, it was a 97-99. It was a comfortable truck, the cab air ride was very sensitive. It had a Mack 10spd. The clutch wasn't up so high it was placed just right which I liked a lot, it didn't strain my leg at all which is one of the things I tend to judge a truck by as far as comfort goes. I got to have the seat all the way forward in any truck I drive because I'm short. Again I could sit on the floor and see over the dash, can't ya tell I hate having air in the seat. :lol: Like the FLD it was a solid built truck.

Peterbilt 379: When I was at my co-op job the company had a fleet of old Woco 379's mainly 02-05 with the round dash. They had one older Pete with the square dash which was an old Wallis unit. They also at the time bought an old Woco unit that had the cowl mounted mirrors which was the only one in the fleet, the rest were door mounted. All had C15 Cats in them. The new thing I had to get use to was the clutch, which honestly I kinda liked it and it wasn't stiff at all. But like Tom said in another thread very easy to slip your foot off of it your shoes are wet or muddy. They were solid built trucks, I will admit I fell in love with them ole Pete's. But the problem with the Pete's was I was in a bind again with me being short and the way the Pete's are set up, if I have no air in the seat I can't see over the dash but if I have air in the seat and wheel tilted all the way down my knees rub the steering column. So I was in a bind there and had to find some way to get comfortable in the thing. I will tell ya I didn't have this problem with the square dashed Pete at all. All were an Eaton 10 spd.

International 9400's: Again when I was at my co-op job we had 2 9400's. One was a 95 that had the sleeper removed so it was a long wheelbase and it had that big ole International steering wheel. There was another 98 9400 with the regular style steering wheel. Both of them didn't tilt at all. They were well built trucks and I could sit on the floor and still see over the dash. But with the International's they have that super high clutch it strain my legs and when I get out my leg is shaking. I learned that one day when I unhooked from one trailer and hooked up to another. It doesn't help that they were stiffer than hell either. So that made the International my least likable truck. These two had a Spicer 10 spd.

Kenworth T600: When they bought the company that was here at the time they had a T600 just sitting there, it didn't run or anything. It was a 90 T600 with a sleeper. Like the International the clutch was high off the floor and that is one thing I don't like in a truck at all. I don't care for Kenworth's much anymore because I had to reach and put a lot of effort to reach the switches and that is something that I disliked big time. It had a Eaton 9spd I believe

Freightliner FLC: They also had a 87 Freightliner FLC that the previous company had. I sat in it too and it had the suspended clutch like the Pete so that was the only thing different in this particular Freightliner, it's like the FLD in every other retrospect so there isn't much a review for this one. It had a 400 Big Cam Cummins with a 9 spd I think.

So there is my unbiased review.

Honestly I'm sure your wondering out of the above which one would I want to drive on a daily basis. Here is my answer:

I am going to start this out by saying this....I can't stand it when guys run around with no air in the seat. All you see coming at you is a ballcap sticking up just above the steering wheel. The guys we have had through here that sat on the floor like they were BiggRiggers always had front end/ front right corner fender benders. Theyall got the warning too....put some damn air in the seat and you will see that shit before you Hit it. I don't take being short as a good excuse either... there is a fella driving for us that is about 5foot 6inches tall, has lots of air in his seat, and hasn't had a fender bender in about 50 years. It seems that when you see a fella driving a large car with a seat in the basement, it is usally a Pete. Must be embrassed to be seen it. Sorry about the Rant. Thanks, Brad

They are a .65 caliber round ball, with 6 #1 bucks (.30 caliber) chasing it out the barrel @ 1300 fps. Unless I'm shootin' clays, that's what is in the shotgun. I like to find the ammunition I would LEAST like to get shot with, and keep any "defensive" weapons loaded to the hilt with it. :thumb:

LOL...better go to work for swift, schneider, jb hunt, etc...at least then people understand when ya take forever & a day to back into a dock or a parking spot.

I learned how to back a trailer as soon as I could reach the pedals on grandpa's lawn tractor...these days, I'm backing off the highway at full throttle in the high split of reverse...if it would go faster, I'd go faster.

Just remember, you ain't driving a truck PULLING a trailer...you are driving the trailer, and the truck is just the steering mechanism. :thumb:

Put a good seat in there...doesn't even have to be expensive, just have a good quality dampening system. My seat doesn't bounce at all...whether it's aired all of the way up or only part way aired up. I set the ride height where I want it, and the seat stays put. :thumb:

Ya know funny thing is it took me a minute to get use to backing my dad's Freightliner backing in a straight line. Didn't realized the trailer still turned. :lol:

I bet if I was told to do a 45 or 90 degree back I'd get it done. :thumb:
