I was poking around some of my Mack photos the other day when I was reminded of an Australian Superliner that was said to have a 12 speed Mack transmission behind a 425HP 3406B. Has anyone here ever heard of this combination?

forgot about some of the cummins. but they are still pretty rare. A few superliners I drove had Cummins but had eaton trans behin them. only seen one cat powerd mack in person. but this is Chicago and in its day it was all mack or nothing.

A 12 speed behind a 3406B would be a great combination for a tractor that pulls a lowboy or a dump trailer.

Since all the class 8 bellhousings, clutches, input shafts etc. are SAE standard, there would be no problem with mating the 12 speed to the Cat.

Not popular, but has been done(mack trans behind a vendor engine)

If the customer wanted vendor engine(usually to match their other trucks in the fleet)They were also looking for Fuller trans(cheaper to order, rebuild and driver friendly)

Know of a 1994 CL, 3406c with a Mack 18.

Just look at the new Macks,All of the Mack trans are behind volvo engines

A friend of mine has a 1982 R-700 Mack triaxle dump with a 3406 Cat and 8LL. bad1989gti , You probably remember it when J+R from Pittston ran it with H+k. Owner now runs it with American asphalt. Joe D.

You know Rayjoe.......Not sure of the spelling.

Is he on here..... bad1989gti ????

That was Joe's truck,, then (Hook Man) ran it until he retired

Durkin contractors from Philly ran a DM 800 (unit # T060) with a 3406A with a 12 speed. Also, whem I worked for Brubacher excavating, They had 2 R 754's that ran 12 speed's behind 3406A Cat's. Both trucks came from Canada originally. As a side note I currently run a CL 733 with a Mack 18 speed trans. post-4550-12649022684527_thumb.jpgpost-4550-12649023485482_thumb.jpg

Hello from Australia

Yes I can remember several COE MACKs powered by 3406 CATS with 12 speeds fitted.

They were owned by a farmer pulling fridge vans, factory fitted around about 1980s.

Also of interest I can also remember three (3) R700s fitted with Cummins 400s

in the mid 1970s, factory fitted for Wettennalls transport.

Some early R700s V8s (865 & 866s?) were repowered with CAT 3408s especially

those involved with heavy haulage (low loaders etc).
