John,

Thanks again for posting pictures of this awesome truck. If you don't mind, what did Jersey do with their weight laws that threatens the use of this truck? You mentioned you were able to put 800 pounds per inch width of tire, what has it changed to now?

Oh, I found a DM800 out on Long Island with the big 23 front and 80k rears on walking beam, just like Conforti's truck. Setup as a dump truck on what looks like 12.00R24 rubber. As of July of 2009 (can't remember the exact date), NJ abolished their former 800lbs. per inch width of tire rule for vehicles registered with "Specialty Weight Tags". Up until that point, owners of trailers registered in NJ with "S Plates" could buy books of single trip permits that you would type out and go wherever you so pleased. They were $100 for a book of 10 permits and you could drop everything and go move basically whatever you wanted at a moments notice, up to 16' wide, 16' tall and 120' overall length. You're only weight restriction was 800 lbs per inch width of tire. Our one tractor/jeep dolly/trailer combination was permitted to gross 406,400 lbs. on 11 axles.

Since July, you have to submit routes, axle weights & spacings, and so on to the state DOT and WAIT for your permits to be approved, much like so many other states in this area. It is now extremely difficult, almost impossible, to get permits in NJ for axel weights over 22,000 lbs per axle. That same 11 axle combination is now pretty much maxed out at 235,000 lbs.

Though we can still perform the job at hand, the days of running heavy, tandem axle tractors in NJ for heavy haul work are essentially over. The truck just weighs too much and does not have the number of axles to fulfill its potential anymore. We always knew it was coming, it was just a matter of time.

Thats a dam shame. What led to this decision? Too many accidents or a bogus move to save the roads?
