It really is difficult to say what the original intent was. That looks to be an "AB" series Mack radiator emblem affixed to the box. It very well could have been for a set of specialty tools for antique Mack trucks judging from the age. Usually tool boxes would have some wear on the interior surface.

Nice antique that would go with any decore; I'd prolly put it in the china cabinet at my place.

Thanks

Would you take a slightly used PETERBUILT for it? It has had an oil leak recently but is now fixed ( I Think ) It is in Gladys, VA sitting around not being used enough. I think it would be a good trade. Email otherdog more info. Also will send a scarecrow from the garden to keep ya company on long trips.

I left the Peterbilt at the south Lynchburg truckstop Saturday morning. If it's not there now at least I know what happened to it. As for the scarecrow, I had too many leaves in the garden to till them in so I decided to burn them off and burned the scarecrow up in the process. The owl was unhurt however.

Producer of poorly photo-chopped pictures since 1999.

Hey I must have bought that owl last year for my deck at home, mostly for a conversation piece. Well when I went outside to check on it, it would not do anything, so I had to carry it to the workbench. After messing with it, it finally would move it's head a little but only does it when you provoke it. I almost threw it away last month but gave it another chance to live awhile longer. I wonder if my bosses son messed with it when they were building me a garage last summer? It was driving the workers crazy whoing. I laughed when they told me about it. Honestly the owl worked overtime everyday, if it had been a real owl he'd been dead along time ago. Funny thing is they really work cause I was looking out my window one morning and a group of crows were coming low overhead straight toward the owl. They got almost over the owl before the lead crow dodged the owl and the other crows followed the dodge.

My worthless as tits on a bull neighbor put one of those porcelain owls with sound on the front of his garage to keep birds and rodents out of his garden a couple years ago. The damned thing wouldn't shut up and my daughter told him he'd better do something about the noise it makes but he was too stupid to heed the warning.

A single well placed shot from my Benjamin Pump 22 cal pellet rifle silenced him. I didn't think he'd just go to pieces such as he did, but no more noise was heard ever again.

That owl was not replaced.

It would be fun to live in Farmington, IL close to where all the action is. I have a young family next door neighbors that he drives a school bus and fires it up Sept. thru June is a diesel and smokes up the neighborhood while he warms it for 45 mins. It literally fogs the whole neighborhood while hes indoors eating breakfast. My mind has wondered many times what not to do legally. I've only seen diesels smoke that bad when they want start, it's just a white cloud.

In reality I'd like to have it as a gift for display in my collection for others to appreciate also. I'm a collector in the true sense and sell nothing. I have many momentos from antique Mack trucks and have a rather large curio cabinet for displaying such. However if that is not an option, I'll let you set the price but inexpensive is what I'd want as this type of thing is "dead expense".

Thanks,

Rob

Not with a cash purchase but I really would like to have it for the aforementioned use. However, I would be willing to purchase a $100.00 series "EE" savings bond for a disadvantaged, or underpriviledged youth, or donate $50.00 to the donor's chosen legitimate charity alongside my own charitable givings.

Next offer?

this mystery appears to be solved. i sent pics to mack museum. they suggest possibly an old retired mack fan with time on his hands made this box, and possibly even the logo. they stated that no one has any knowledge of any such box produced by mack in mack's history. they are going to look further to verify if it is even a factory mack logo plate, as they suspect it wasd made by the craftsman . i'll post that info when i receive it from the mack museum curorator. i am attempting to purchase this box and present it as a gift to who ever the members of this site elect via a private vote . i know rob is drooling over this nice piece . the problem is that the owner is an admitted former horse salessman and is driving quite a hard bargain with me. time will tell.....

OK Men , it's official. Don Schumaker , Curator at Mack Museum has investigated, confirmed ,concurred , and informed. Here are the official findings and a little extra.

Mack never had wooden boxes. Any Chasis tool boxes were made of steel. Hand tools that would have come with each new truck were enclosed in a cloth roll up container.

The name plate is in all likelyhood original, and not made by the box craftsman. It is in fact a radiator nameplate from a Mack model ,4AB23A, and is made of 20 gauge brass plate . ( see attched drawing from Mack ) The drawing was done on January 27th, 1925, but in fact the paltes were actually already in use from earlier in the 1920's. Although the drawing calls for laquered brass finnish , in many cases the brass plate was finnished in nickel plate rather than laquer.

In conclusuion, this box is not authentic vintage Mack. Howwever , ( in my opinion ) It still has great artistic value to anyone who has the Mack blood in the veins, and it stands as tribute to the man who took the time to show his appreciation for the work horse that Mack stands for. I am still hoping to obtain this unique box and do with it what I stated earlier. I'm hoping that when I inform the former Bostonian horse salesman of the the fact that the box is not a "pot of gold" that he will work with me to see that this fine peice of work ends up with a deserving and greatfull owner. I'll keep ya 's posted....,

Joe

Well, the future is shakey on this box. Horse trader claims offer of two hundred . I thought he should take the two hundred, but he is going to ebay for more. I sure am curious to see what this box brings. I think it may be time for me to bow out gracefully. Can anyone tell me the value of the name plate , and does anyone have one to sell ?

Watch Ebay, they turn up there fairly often. There was a guy that was making repro's,Phil Baumgarten,he passed away but I think one of his kids took over.I bought one of his repro's someone had put on Ebay, very good quality.I paid $29.99 for it.I didn't give much more than that for the original one I have either.

I thank ya for that info,

I thought the horse trader seemed a little on the silly side after telling him what my plans were for the thing, and the fact thats it's not a Mack product. Maybe he could put a little snake oil in the box and try to bring up the value a little ? I'm thinking that anyone here who had an interest has lost it by now . Now it's on ebay being sold as a " Vintage Mack Tool Box " . I think he comes from a long line of horse trader's .

That was not my bid, it was the horse traders. I offered him a hundred for the thing before the e bay stint. I chose not to participate in the bidding. We see what happens next..lol.., I should be hearing from him . The fate of the box continues....It's kinda fun to watch this box create a little dramatic excitment for us..Hope all is well for everyone...I just picked up that "41 White " from Oregon, and am making my way back to my shop in Florida. I'm in Idaho tonite. Watch closely for the next chapter of " The Saga of the Old Wooden MACK Box"....stay tuned...lol
