I'm in process of buying a 1945 LS85 pumper. My first question is about the motor. All I know at this point is that it is a 6 cylinder gas engine. Can anyone give me an idea about horsepower, torque, displacement, etc..? Second question.... Tranny is a 5spd. with 2spd. rear. Since my lovely wife wants to be the primary driver while I run our ladder truck, I want to know if there is any problem with changing the rear making the truck a straight 5spd ? It will not carry water, and should not gross over 16000 lbs. I know the obvious answer is "don't let your lovely wife drive the darn thing" , nonetheless, I'd still like to know.

#1 It should be a 707 engine if you sent the Vin.# to the Mack Museum, they will send you everything have about the Rig.

#2 I would think if you leave the Rig in high range you should beable to run OK.

If your wife can handle the transmission, it would take about 30 seconds to explain how to use the 2 speed. If you don't like getting passed, let her drive the slow truck.

Point well taken...... However, I'm told by the seller the truck tops out at 45mph. That would be another reason to consider changing the rear ratio. Fortunately, my '74 Seagrave tiller truck tops out at 62mph.

I will contact the museum and send them the vin. Thanks for your inputs Bollweevil and Tinman. Great help!!

hi guy, welcome with the mack, the engine ,like someone said should be a 707 c.i. if it is a mack engine or it could have a hall-scott engine , like previous ,send your vin # to the mack museum in allentown pa. for all the as built info. I had a 47 LS85 and sold it last sept after I got a 54 LS85 (its now up at PFAHL'S in conn. get some work done to it. If you want to see a great looking LS85 google 'hoot gibson 52 mack' .

also your truck might have a governor on it to top out at 45.

The only thing that would concern me about a woman driving it is ,NOT TO DRIVE WHILE USING THE CELL PHONE OR TEXTING....... good luck

JDCMIx,

It should be the 707A engine- which is listed as 225 horspower at 2500 rpm, 578 foot pounds torque. The truck should weigh about 14000 pounds, without water in the tank. Most were straight 5 speeds- however non synchormesh- so you will have to teach your wife how to double clutch if she doesn't know yet.the 2 speed rear should be easy enough to teach her how to use that.
