My recently aquired S75 fire truck has dual points and coils that are fried and cooked. Way to much heat. What is the cause? Wrong coil?

For a temporary fix, we wired a ballast resisitor in front of the one coil we replaced. Was a friends idea that seems to work.

Did stock wiring have a ballast resistor?

Just came across your question. The answer is Yes you need a ballast resistor. The points themselves should not have more than 9.5 volts going to them(12 volt system?). Also, the condesor keeps the points from arcing when they break, so if the condensor(s) were bad that could contribute to the problem.
