Mechanical Versus Electronic Engines . . .

Recommended Posts

so, my 1988 R688T has a mechanical E6 engine in it.

when did electronic controls start to appear on Mack engines? what years or engine models signify the changeover?

I do not believe any E6 engines were electronic. The E7 is the first engine to go electronic. I think it was around 1990. My 1992 EM7 was electronic. I believe some E7s were mechanical. I am sure there are others on this site that know for sure (and will correct me if I am wrong). :thumb:

I believe 1990 was the first production year for the VMAC electronics.I had a 1991 CH with an electronic E7400.You could still get mechanical E7's until '94.

so, is there a horsepower cutoff or something? are 400hp and above all electronic, while 350's and below are not? and anything beyond 94?

I have a copy of an old publication stating that on August 1, 1990 Mack Trucks issued a press release announcing the introduction of the VMAC system. These were originally available in chassis manufactured in 1991. The publication also lists order codes for E7 VMAC engines from 250-400 horsepower. I can't recall seeing any of the lower horsepower models.

I think that's a typo. A 1998 chassis ought to have an E-Tech engine. The E6 was probably retired sometime mid 1989, maybe a bit later.

Last I could find of the E6 was in 1990 however in 1991 it still listed EME6-250L and 350L plus the EE6-350, I think these were for export.
