Hi everybody :)

I just had a quick question about a Mack that i want to buy my husband for his bd and i thought this would be the best place to ask my question.. lol

Okay here it is:

I'm looking into getting him a 89 Mack DM with a E-6 turbo 300, "the guy wrote 300 macadie if that changes anything" can anybody tell me if these motors are any good? It's a roll off and it will be working alot so i dont really want to buy him a truck that he will always have problems with the motor or something like that you know??

Been there already with the darn 3116 Caterpillars.

Now apparently the engine and transmission were rebuilt about 100,000km ago. And i think the truck has close to 800,000km.

Thanks in advance!

The Maxidyne engine is 3 times that little Cat engine depending on its treatment the engine will be the least of your worries!

Dm is a very tough truck again depending on how its been treated will do what ever it is asked to do!

If the price is right do for it!

i would absolutely go for it,,good truck,,good engine,,but wouldnt go much over $8000...good luck...bob

Thanks everybody for all of your input i really appreciate it :thumb:

I think i'm going to buy it this weekend.

Bob try more $24,000  roll offs are not at every corner around here and when you finally find one well you dont want to wait to long. And at this price it was a real bargain also usually there in the 30-32.

I have to drive 6hrs for this one and have it float it back home, but it's a real beauty and i'm sure my husband will be really happy.

I'm the one who follows up on the trucks services so I have all of the trucks service every 5,000km so i think it will be okay for alot of km.

Thanks again everybody for all of your help on this one.

BTW i included pictures of the truck.

looks like the truck prior life was a mixer . if you notice the bumper is set forward for the p.t.o.. most roll offs i have ever seen have the p.t.o. on the tranny.

We the unwilling, Lead by the unqualified, are doing the impossible, for the ungrateful.

most roll offs up here are crank mount pto, I wouldnt have my truck any other way!

What kind of pumps are commonplace on rolloff trucks in CA? Rexroth piston, Vickers vane, or Chelsea gear type? Most of the crank driven pumps around here are Rexroth. Trouble free except when they break, it is expensive!!

chelsea or muncie is most popular. company trucks are 50/50 (tranny/crank) but any O/O i know of here, we all run crank mount. easier to use, trouble free, better flow, and oil stays warmer in winter. only problem is the extra lenght it adds to truck, Im 4" over lenght if i get caught using my 5 axle trl. bobo

What a woman. Buying her man a truck. Doesn't get any better than that. Can't beat a Mack.

my thoughts exactly!..I didn't reply, but what a wife!

Gear pumps eh? I always kinda liked vane types, or piston as they run a long longer between rebuilds when used in adverse climates and conditions. A lot easier to drive at variable speed also using a lower engine rpm.
