My new RTO-14613 trans has an oil trough that is bolted onto the top shift cover. I can't tell if this is just a splash deflector or it actually oils a gear. post-78-0-54147100-1313206378_thumb.jpgIt is denoted as #4 on the attached drawing. The cover I have is a std. housing where the truck this trans will go into uses a RTOF style cover moving the shift tower forward a few inches. I am planning to use the RTOF style cover from the original RTOF-12513 trans unless I need another cover to support this trough. There is no way to bolt it to the RTOF style cover I have currently.

Any ideas if this trough is actually needed on the RTOF style cover?RTO-14613 Shift Cover.pdf

Here are a few interior photos of the trans.

man, look at those beautiful gears,,sorry cant help ya rob,,,but it does look like its designed to oil a gear,or section.bob

The trough routes "spash lubrication" oil back into the case. Seems they had some problems with oil seepage around the shift tower so this blocks the oil throw off from the gearset and drains it back into the sump.

It is a oil drain rail it's used to supply oil to the bearings, it's very important.

Thanks for your reply but this trough drips back onto a gear that is 1/3-1/2 submerged in lubricant. I can't see where it helps to lubricate anything but Eaton's explanation seems very plausible concerning "throw off" of oil from the spinning gears.

I have been told two storys by eaton schools and cant say for sure what its for.But the 15 speed had a campain on installing them in the 70s on the 15 speed o/d trans. It was told to drip oil into the top counter shaft brg and also told to drip oil onto the O/D set of gears which is the two postion back where it could drip oil.I have a 9 speed mack T 2090 that leaks out of the tower around the stick. The breather is open and i run CL5 85/90 oil in it and am now wandering why it leaks or foams but not out of the breather.I add a qt ever month to it.

On the T2090- You maybe pressurizing the case from leaking o-rings on the range shifter. Build up air pressure and shut everything down and listen and feel around the filler hole (with the plug out) and shift the range from high to low and back and see if you get leakage from the shifter. Rings and gaskets are available from Mack. Not a bad job to replace- if they are leaking they will put air and oil out around the the shifter stick.

There is a change out in the manual for the o-ring in the range shifter to fix this issue.

The attached scan is from "T2090/T2100 Transimissions Service Manual", Mack Truck, Inc., February 1984, 10-200(9,10)
