Finally took the winch truck for a drive today:

This morning I finished up plumbing the air lines for the transmission. All went well. After gettting the oil leak fixed with a new gasket and gray silicone gasket maker, then refilling the trans it was time to go for a drive. The trans is stiff to shift and takes twice the effort the former 12513 did to shift through the gears. I did not get going fast enough to exercise the splitter but the lo to hi, and hi to low range selections work fine.

Best part is that low speed "growl" in forward and reverse is gone.

Hows the fuel level?

Actually full. I started out in this truck to the show in South Bend, IN at the end of May and turned back due to transmission noise starting this whole ordeal.

crap...how boring...you should have gotten out of the corn field and onto the highway and opened it up, tested that splitter!

You'll probably have to run it a while before it shifts really smooth, it's all stiff now because it's new. After a while it'll prolly shift like a Peterbilt with 735,000 miles on it...of course then you'll be wanting a Peterbilt...the story never ends...

A Peterbilt with 735,000 miles?

I'm calling the people at Guiness World Records, and J.C. himself cause this has got to be a record!!

well, it might be more'n that, i'm guesstimating. I've put over 600,000 on it in 5 years. No record or anything, but not bad either considering how lazy I am,eh?

I have a difficult time referring to someone that sits a truck 120,000 miles a year "lazy".

Sorry.

Got out and tested the splitter today. This also brings up another question. Is there any way to make the splitter operation faster on both the up and down shift? I have a 5000 series slave valve and 5/32nds air lines to everthing running to the shift knob. The high/low range is very quick in operation but the splitter seems to be a little slow.

I don't notice any noise from the transmission at all. Truth be told I also don't have the mat back in the cab, nor headliner installed so there is quite a bit of road noise permeating the cab. This could drown out any road noise.

some do work a little slower than others, but i'd still guess it's just the newness in your case. it'll probably get better all the time as it gets broken in.
