We got the 12-71 running yesterday! an so far so good, even with the half/ass injectors!... Stephen Lucarino one of my friends from the Brockway site has been workin on the motor all week an it wasn't an E/Z job to say the least!! someone put a lot of money into this motor but did not complete the job. There were some rack parts missing an frozen injectors, the oil pan was left bolted with about 4 bolts an needed a new gasket an so on. We pressure tested the block last Tuesday an all is well, me an Steve checked the bottom end an the bearings had very little if any wear on them. Well once we got the injectors bled down an she caught the fuel...O-MG What A sweet sound that was commin out of our garage on Friday!! Very little smoke,only when you cracked it she would throw smoke! Then we let her idle for a little to see if she would build up any oil out of the blower tubes, but they stayed clean so that was a good sign also. So now I guess I'm gona pull the 80ml injectors out an put in N70's, Stephen is going to check with his dad an see if he's got a couple of turbos an we will be on our way to haulin some Portland Cement!! We took videos with sound an as soon as my son gets his ass over here I'll have it for you guys

Great new Ernie!! I know how good that engine sounds from being around them myself. I've looked several places but have not found any N70's yet but there are some other places I need to look also. You'll like those N80's with turbocharging.

If you find 12 new or reman 80's let me know I could live with the 80's only because no one but me would be drivin this tractor, an if I put 20,000 mi a year on it that would be a lot! Steve is used to seeing holes in pistons with the 80's but again thats with the natural engines not the turbo engines, thanks Rob!

The turbochargers do make one hell of a difference. My engine with N80's has a little over 6300 hours in generator duty and is all original.

Ernie, talk about a screaming Detroit: last evening I'm assembling a repair job in the shop just outside the overhead door. From a distance of about a mile, I hear the unmistakable sound of one of those things. Turns out about 3 minutes later, an older "Jimmy" passes the shop, (slowly) with a full load of corn on. I've seen the truck many times as it belongs to a near farmer and I could tell he was loaded by the lack of speed, and amount of shifting that was done!!

That is how a standby genset operates. Cold iron stop to 1800rpm as fast as it can get there!

Rob, I got to talkin to the guys in the shop at this place, an one of the old timers told me that they (the V71's) never blow up!! he said they run until they can't keep oil in them, then they rebuild them. He was tellin me about the older Cat motors ( D342, 1693's an the 1674's ) he said they would only get half the life out of the Cat then the Detroit's an it got so $$$$$ to rebuild them that sold them for parts an made a bundle!! He also told me about the (pre-lube starters) they had to put on the Cat motors so they wouldn't blow up in cold weather!

It is only my opinion but there is no finer standby emergency generator powerplant than a two stroke Detroit engine. There are so many less problems due to lack of vibration as other engines as they age.

All the Morbark chippers at the Westvaco woodyards used to have 12V-71's on them, then they started using 600hp. Cummins engines. They'd sit there and grind up sticks of pulpwood all day every day.

Ya know, I didn't see any Cummins motors in any of those Compressor's, but I am a Cummins fan as well! I think the N14 is a far better motor then the 3406 Cat, now thats just my opinion (the ones that I owned anyway}
