Had to go near the Trade Center today around Wall Street. Saw all the protesters. Asked about it and all I got was gibberish. So my question is What is it all about, Communism or just a bunch of feather merchants or what??? paul

You could talk to 100 people and get 100 different responses for what the protest is about. Nobody seems to know why they are there.

I did see a list of "demands" though...some of them were outright ridiculous.

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not

lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by

the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, formerly divided by the color of our skin, gender, sexual orientation,

religion, or lack thereof, political party and cultural background, we acknowledge

the reality: that there is only one race, the human race, and our survival requires the

cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption

of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their

brethren; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but

corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that

no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power.

We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest

over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably

assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the

original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give CEO’s

exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated gender inequality and discrimination in the workplace.

They have poisoned the food supply, and undermined the farming system through

monopolization.

They have continuously sought to end the rights of workers to negotiate their pay and

make complaints about the safety of their workplace.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education,

which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut

workers’ healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the

culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of

contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of

profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have

produced and continue to produce.

They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.

They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.

They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives in order

to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty book keeping, and inactive

ingredients in pursuit of profit.

They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the

media.

They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.

They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.

They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government

contracts.

They have participated in a directly racist action by accepting the contract from the State

of Georgia to murder Troy Davis.

To the people of the world,

We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge

you to assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to

address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we

offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

Join us and make your voices heard!

A Message From Occupied Wall Street (Day Five)

Published 2011-09-22 07:51:42 UTC by OccupyWallSt

at OccupyWallStreet.org

This is the fifth communiqué from the 99 percent. We are occupying Wall Street.

On September 21st, 2011, Troy Davis, an innocent man, was murdered by the state of Georgia. Troy Davis was one of the 99 percent.

Ending capital punishment is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, four of our members were arrested on baseless charges.

Ending police intimidation is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, the richest 400 Americans owned more than half of the country’s population.

Ending wealth inequality is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, we determined that Yahoo lied about occupywallst.org being in spam filters.

Ending corporate censorship is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, roughly eighty percent of Americans thought the country was on the wrong track.

Ending the modern gilded age is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, roughly 15% of Americans approved of the job Congress was doing.

Ending political corruption is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, roughly one sixth of Americans did not have work.

Ending joblessness is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, roughly one sixth of America lived in poverty.

Ending poverty is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, roughly fifty million Americans were without health insurance.

Ending health-profiteering is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, America had military bases in around one hundred and thirty out of one hundred and sixty-five countries.

Ending American imperialism is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, America was at war with the world.

Ending war is our one demand.

On September 21st, 2011, we stood in solidarity with Madrid, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Madison, Toronto, London, Athens, Sydney, Stuttgart, Tokyo, Milan, Amsterdam, Algiers, Tel Aviv, Portland and Chicago. Soon we will stand with Phoenix, Montreal, Cleveland and Atlanta. We’re still here. We are growing. We intend to stay until we see movements toward real change in our country and the world.

You have fought all the wars. You have worked for all the bosses. You have wandered over all the countries. Have you harvested the fruits of your labors, the price of your victories? Does the past comfort you? Does the present smile on you? Does the future promise you anything? Have you found a piece of land where you can live like a human being and die like a human being? On these questions, on this argument, and on this theme, the struggle for existence, the people will speak. Join us.

We speak as one. All of our decisions, from our choice to march on Wall Street to our decision to continue occupying Liberty Square, were decided through a consensus based process by the group, for the group.

"I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., with others on that day or the days immediately following, for as long as I can, with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine by occupying Freedom Plaza to demand that America's resources be invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and exploitation. We can do this together. We will be the beginning."

I guess I'm one of the 1% that agrees that capital punishment is the best way to keep violent offenders from repeating their crimes upon innocent victims.

I suppose I am part of the 1% who feels that wealth is gained through lifetime of hard work and perseverance...the reward for taking certain risks when those risks pay off...and that those unwilling to take those risks have no right to any part of my rewards just as I have no right to any part of anyone else's reward.

Perhaps I fall inside the 1% who feels economic and industrial growth are a GOOD thing, as that is what creates jobs and opportunities for anyone willing to take advantage of any open doors they find....even if they have to pry the damned door open for themselves.

As one of the alleged 1%, I firmly believe that the only people unemployed in this country are unemployed BY CHOICE! There is no reason why anyone cannot find something to do and some way to get paid to do it and create their own job. If they are unwilling to do that, there are still plenty of jobs out there. They may not be "prestigious" or "high paying" jobs, but they will put food on the table and keep a roof over your head (unless of course you bought more house than you needed...but then why is that society's fault?)

Out here in the 1%, we believe that poverty cannot and will not be cured by enabling those in poverty to continue sitting around with their hand out collecting money the government has confiscated from those who have made the effort to pay their own way through this life. When a person gets hungry, they will do what it takes to fill their belly...even if that means getting a job flipping burgers at McDonald's. I shouldn't have to give up a portion of my paycheck to buy groceries for an unemployed person who lives next door to a McDonald's with a "help wanted" sign in the window.

Here in the 1%, we believe that risks have potential consequences if they do not work out. We also believe that when that risk DOES works out, it should yield rewards. As it pertains to "health profiteering", doctors spend 8-10 years (or more) going to school and learning how to be a doctor. Medical school is expensive, and it is not uncommon for a doctor to begin his/her career $250K or more in the hole. Pharmaceutical companies spend BILLIONS of dollars researching and developing new drugs to cure existing diseases. When those drugs do not work as planned, the losses are astronomical. Why SHOULDN'T a doctor be allowed to profit from practicing medicine? Why SHOULDN'T a pharmaceutical company be allowed to recover their losses and pay for their R& D expenses when a new drug does what it is supposed to do? If it weren't for these "rewards", nobody would take the risks, and there would be NO doctors, and there would be NO drugs. Hope you don't get sick.

As part of the 1%, I believe that war is ended one of two ways: Either you win...or you lose. The loser caves to the winner's demands in order to stop the fight...and at that point, the fight is over. Our demand made to our enemies is simple: Stop trying to kill us and our allies around the world. Their demand made to us is not so simple: Die. The wars we are involved in will not simply go away just because we pull our troops out and bring them home. Our enemies will follow them right over here and continue the war on OUR soil until every last one of us is dead. That is not an option to us over here in the 1%.

Now I cannot be certain of this, but I would imagine there is more than just 1% who feels the way I do....just like I am quite certain this nutcase group "occupying" various places does not represent even 1/2 of the 99% they claim...

...and one more thing:

“To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.”

I'm 100% in agreement with Rowdy's statement. Their "demands" are to say the least interesting, although it does sound like a cross between hippy crap from the 60's and Karl Marx. I've read their demands 4 or 5 times and am truly stunned. This is what is taught in schools and colleges?

To the ones with out work, most won't "lower themselves" to what they consider meanial work, I was raised and raised our sons that a job is a job! Do your best at what ever you have to do and do it with pride, you're still making money whether your sweeping a floor or running a company.

I grew up knowing that if you did something wrong stand up and admit it, you take what is meted out as part of being a responsible person. I do see from their demands that we had better start teaching the tradional values and work ethics or we are done as a nation. Paul

I agree and thought of one other thing about what doctors make. They have very high insurance to protect themselves in the event they get sued. Not in all cases but in a lot of them probably someone who doesn't want to work is looking for an easy way to get rich. Just my 2 cents worth. Trey

Which is different from the insurance requirements for trucks? $5,000-$10,000/year for insurance is ridiculous for a truck...but that's pretty typical. Why is it so high? Because the feds mandated $1,000,000 liability minimum, so you get the 1-800-sue-a-trucker lawyers who will sue the truck company for $1,000,000 following a minor fender bender with their "client". The insurance company might settle for $250,000-$500,000 and everyone wins, right? Insurance companies charge a little more in premiums anticipating these sorts of settlements, which is why it is as high as it is.

No different for doctors. In states with tort reform laws on the books, which limit a doctor's liability to ACTUAL damages, with reasonable limits for punitive damages, and perhaps some guidance in regards to "pain and suffering"....those states have lower malpractice premiums than states with no such laws and a history of frivolous lawsuits resulting in huge awards for damages.

The insurance companies, much like any OTHER business, are in business to make a profit. Without profits, there is no reason to be in business. Any expense which cuts into those profits will be made up elsewhere. Take Bank of America, for example. Dick Durbin adds an amendment to a bill which limits a bank's ability to charge retailers for debit purchases. So, since the banks cannot charge the retailers, they charge the customers. Now Dick Durbin is telling customers not to do business with Bank of America because Bank of America responded to HIS legislation in a manner which protected their profits....which should have been expected.

Some people seem to think the act of government raping certain other citizens won't cause those certain other citizens to alter their behavior to minimize the effects of said governmental raping....and are offended when those certain other citizens look for ways to avoid the governmental rape altogether.

Then there are those of us (the 1%) who realize that businesses are in business to make a profit, and any changes made to limit their ability to be profitable will be met with changes to their business model in order to protect the profitability of the business....even if that means packing up shop and moving to another country.

Want to end poverty in America? Make sure there are jobs available for Americans to do, and stop trying to make it "comfortable" or "socially acceptable" to be in poverty.

Want jobs in America? Make it easy to be profitable running a business in America.

Want superior health care in America? Make it profitable for people to be in the medical profession and advance medical technology.

Without profits, there is no incentive to produce anything, and mediocrity becomes the norm.

Good idea!!

The one thing about the Occupy Wall Street crowd that resonates with many Americans is their opposition to bank bailouts. The idea of using our tax money to bail out millionaires is nuts.

But that's exactly what's happening with Solyndra. Some of the $535 million that taxpayers just lost with Solyndra is about to be used to pay off the investment of billionaire George Kaiser and other investors. These millionaires and billionaires made risky investments on Solyndra, and they lost. When rich investors make risky bets and lose, they should have to eat their losses. They certainly shouldn't get paid back by taxpayers. But these friends of Obama are about to be. That's not only unethical, it's illegal.

It's in direct violation of the 2005 energy law, which clearly states that taxpayer loans get paid back before private loans on these projects. Otherwise, taxpayer money will be siphoned into the pockets of the rich guys. But someone in the Obama administration made a deal with rich Obama fundraisers to go around the law.

If the Wall Street protesters are really mad about taxpayers subsidizing millionaires and billionaires, than they should bring the house down on the Obama administration for subsidizing a risky investment made by a billionaire friend of the president. But so far we haven't heard a peep from the protesters about it.

Time to speak up and shout out, or shut up and go home

There was a suit brought against numerous companies for this. A 14 year old "child" cut his lip on a plastic model airplane propeller from a Monogram B-29. The 1-800 lawyer sued Monogram for not having a warning label on the part, Hamilton Standard for the propeller design, Boeing for using it on the real aircraft,Pratt and Whitney for designating the propeller on their real engines and the local hobby shop for selling the kit. The won over 15 million dollars and won the appeal gainst their win. Thats What has got to change.Pick up a toy or model and look at all the registered trade marks....all there to protect the OEM makers from the lawyers. Paul
