I had passed this place on US 6 in Youngsville, PA a few times but either the weather was bad or I didn't have time to stop. Finally one day, the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars so I pulled into the lot, grabbed my camera, and went for a walk. The trucks are owned by a company named Wiilliams Lumber. There was a guy there working in a shop that said it was okay to walk around, but didn't have much info to offer.

From a tag on the door, I learned this DR was a 1970 with a 335 Cummins.

This Mack had a DM600 badge on the cowl, but a U609 tag on the driver's door.

The first time I'd seen a Unishift lever.

Great group of photos (and trucks) I always like the big water tank up in the air on those old mixers - just put it up there front and center where it can be seen, not all tucked in like now. Is that a wrecker on the back of the DM?

Yeah it appears to be (sorry, I took these a few years ago and some of the details have been forgotten.)

holy nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A u model!! i saw the video of these on youtube. any other info on that u model? what year is it? someone should buy it.

The only clue I have on the year is the turn signals next to the headlights. I think those were only used in the first few years, maybe until '66?

Jim

I have been past that place once or twice myself, never had time to stop and look around,i do remember seeing some of those trucks for sale in wheels of time a few years back, made a point to say the striped trucks were all painted with Dupont Imron,i remember thinking the cabover Diamond Reo seemed to be in nice shape!....................Mark

I'm glad you folks like the pics.

I remembered 2 things:

The fella in the shop was restoring a Lincoln sedan from the 60's. You can see some classic cars in the background of a few pics.

He mentioned that the DR in the shed (7th pic down) belonged to the owner and that the owner wanted to be buried in it.

"You mean after he dies?" I asked

"I would imagine so" he replied with a straight face.

Jim

Here's a question for you guys. In that u model it has a unishift transmission. What is a unishift? What is the pattern in it and is it rare?

A "Unishft" transmission is a Mack Duplex transmission that is air shifted in the compound. It only has a single gearshift selector and a "flipper" handle that is moved from the low to high side. When the flipper is moved, and the clutch pedal fully depressed, a switch opens allowing air to pass to a cylinder that shifts the compound, or auxilary section of the transmission. They worked well if maintained proper but a lot of them exploded from lack of maintenance and getting hung up between gears when power was applied. This could split the rear case. A lot of times the "Unishft" was replaced with a two stick duplex.

The same transmission behind a diesel was called "Unishift", and behind a gas engine was called a "MonoShift", from what I've seen.

Here's the street view picture of the trucks.

I have a big tank.

Did I miss a pic? I didn't notice a Marmon in the whole lot.

yes, here's all my pictures-

http://www.bigmacktrucks.com/index.php?/user/1374-other-dog/page__tab__gallery

I either right clicked on the page and then clicked "same image as" or if it said "file" at the top I clicked on that, then "save image as" and saved it to my pictures and posted it that way- browse, select, attach this file, add reply.

I wouldn't be ashamed to drive that blue and white Diamond Reo myself but I'd prolly repaint it. I've neve been fond of the lighter blue colors without a little pearl, or metallic enhancement.

Much like Steely Dan, I had to go back and do it again. I clicked "file" in the top left corner, box drops down, clicked "save",another box opened, then clicked "save image as",you can save it to pictures, documents, or desktop so you can find it when you want to post it on BMT. Here's another random one from somewhere in the U.S.

Not a bad looking place (IMO).

Thanks.

It didn't occur to me to do it that way. I was trying to find a way using the image, not the handy-dandy buttons on top.

Thanks for the gallery link too. I wanted to see more pics of the mixer and was not disappointed. Beautiful restoration!
