Green Dash Posted February 19, 2012 Share Posted February 19, 2012 I had passed this place on US 6 in Youngsville, PA a few times but either the weather was bad or I didn't have time to stop. Finally one day, the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars so I pulled into the lot, grabbed my camera, and went for a walk. The trucks are owned by a company named Wiilliams Lumber. There was a guy there working in a shop that said it was okay to walk around, but didn't have much info to offer.From a tag on the door, I learned this DR was a 1970 with a 335 Cummins.This Mack had a DM600 badge on the cowl, but a U609 tag on the driver's door.The first time I'd seen a Unishift lever.The rest of the story... 2 Quote Jim Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You can see some classic cars in the background of a few pics.He mentioned that the DR in the shed (7th pic down) belonged to the owner and that the owner wanted to be buried in it."You mean after he dies?" What is the pattern in it and is it rare?A "Unishft" transmission is a Mack Duplex transmission that is air shifted in the compound. It only has a single gearshift selector and a "flipper" handle that is moved from the low to high side. When the flipper is moved, and the clutch pedal fully depressed, a switch opens allowing air to pass to a cylinder that shifts the compound, or auxilary section of the transmission. They worked well if maintained proper but a lot of them exploded from lack of maintenance and getting hung up between gears when power was applied. This could split the rear case. A lot of times the "Unishft" was replaced with a two stick duplex.The same transmission behind a diesel was called "Unishift", and behind a gas engine was called a "MonoShift", from what I've seen.Rob Quote Plodding along with no job nor practical application for my existence, but still trying to fix what's broke. I was trying to find a way using the image, not the handy-dandy buttons on top.Thanks for the gallery link too. I wanted to see more pics of the mixer and was not disappointed. Beautiful restoration!
