Yep, that's right. Our favorite ole "Trusty, yet Crusty" Dodge is back at it. Tonight begins in maiden voyage with a load of not one, not two, but three pallets full of old Mack parts going to the blaster outfit I use. Gonna have a good bit of room with all those fenders, doors, suspension parts, grille shells, shutter assemblies, rims, spacers, brake drums, brake spiders, backing plates, crossmembers, plus a couple of aluminum cased transmissions, and another iron cased transmission off the floor of the shop.

Been tough not having a pickup truck available for the past few months. The old standby Jeep has performed admirably however but cannot work with the larger stuff.

I thought the Dodge was retired after the crash? You said it was pretty rough and you found that out during disassembly. :thumbsdown:
This is true but the basis of the mechanical structure is still sound. I can't seem to break the barrier of spending $10K on a part time vehicle as this will still perform as to fit and function. On top of that, I still kinda like it. The only vehicle I've ever bought new, and likely will remain that way. Sometime I'll run across something priced right and I'll replace "Crusty" but not right now. When gasoline hits $5.00 plus per gallon, and people that don't need to own one ton pickup trucks except to "fit in" start looking to unload them, I'll be waiting in the shadows.

Finally got my carb issue worked out on my '85. The thermostatic choke coil took a dump and was letting the choke flop around causing the running issue. Also got the flatbed installed.

Looks a lot better than the service body that was on it originally. Those style trucks were still brutes using heavy driveline components. With the exception of being hard on a gallon of fuel, they were virtually bulletproof. Like they used to say the only way to beat a Dodge is with a sledgehammer.

the only way to beat a Dodge is with a sledgehammer.

I was about ready to take the sledgehammer approach. I dropped and cleaned the tank, replaced every rubber fuel line, some steel lines, fuel pump, rebuilt the carb, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, ballast resister, and still battled. Finally when I got some help and time, I was able to watch the carb while my stepson Randy started her up. That is when I saw the choke plate flopping around. As soon as I put a nose picker on it and held it against the vacuum pull-off,,,TA-DA!!! It now has a manual choke. I don't regret any of the replaced items cause I now know their age and condition.

Just shy of 800 miles on the clock today without trouble. Very heavy too. Had a rear tandem cutoff, a 6-71 Detroit engine and a small block Chrysler engine plus some small parts aboard, and on the trailer.

Yep that truck deserves it's reputation, (like me).

Frustration aside, a few bucks and a few minutes of your time to repair? Today, similar symptoms could be caused by a million dollar ecm.

Those were good times.

Just shy of 800 miles on the clock over the weekend with prolly 7500# on the trailer and truck, (maybe more) and all went well. Can't tell from the way ole "Crusty" drove he had ever been hurt. My "calibrated eyeball" alignment seems to be near dead on as there was no drift, pull, shake, or anything out of the ordinary. All in all a great trip meeting up with some very nice people along the way.

That way when he parks his Ranger at the mall parking lot, no one will ding his doors - would not want to be the first one to scratch that ride.

You have to watch those hay haulers - there is always room for one more bale, and straps - STRAPS? We don't need no stinkin' straps

Speaking of alignment, I saw this pickup in Ohio just the other day. It was not turning or changing lanes, it was going straight down the highway- sort of.

Rangers are terrible about rusting the front shock/spring perch off. The alignment suffers first until things come discombobulated and truck no longer drives. Sadly I've towed a couple of fatalities in due to this.

I like the tire on top of the load. Helps with low under passes. On the way home from Burlington last night a pick up in front of me kept puking out bales for about 5 miles. His horses will be pissed when he gets home.
