Just brought home a 1943 Dodge 1 ton fire truck.

Seems that in the many years of, and differant owners, there is about three coats of paint on all the chrome goodies!

Starts out as O. D. and ends up as a very faded red.

I'm looking for a gentle way to remove the paint without scratching the chrome.

Any words of wisdome out there?

Thanks,

Packer

Hi,

I see that you just couldn't pass up the fire truck! I am planing on going out your way 2 week in september, are you going to be home? anyway I have used zip strip on that stuff before and worked great, the chrome is hard enough that it wont etch and the paint just curls right off, you might have to use a plastic scraper and reapply some more stripper to get the rest off.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just finished stripping the paint from the bumper on my KW. Went and picked up some of that citrus based stripper at Lowes. Super easy to use. Went through two layers of paint like it was nothin' Scraped the pealing paint with a new plastic putty knife. Unfortunatly, whoever painted it used some sort of chemical to etch the chrome so the paint would stick. :pat: Hopefully you won't have that problem! Best of luck with your project!

During WWII the chrome had to be painted over if it even made it on the truck at all. We have a 42 Dodge Fire engine also and all of the chrome was painted and still has the the original pin stripping on it also. Cant blame you fro wanting it to be chrome though :D
