I know the feeling of anticipation. After we fixed the injector pump on our B model, I couldn't wait to hear it run. It took forever to prime the system and it was frustrating. But that feeling of sitting in that seat, hitting that pedal, and hearing that beautiful sound is made so much better when you had to wait for it. Especially after that terrifying feeling of sitting in the seat when it ran away the first time, it was a huge relief.

Wait till you fire up a stuck Detroit and it sounds very much like it's gonna come unglued. Then you know what a terrible feeling is!!

Luckily, all our Detroits have been free. We always keep something to cover the intake, just in case. I've seen videos of them running away, and just the video is the worst horror movie ever filmed.

A Detroit is very easy to figger if free without ever turning it over. Just work the shutdown lever with the cable removed. If the last 1/4" of lever travel is resistive but not tight, the injectors are not frozen. A Detroit by design opens the injectors to "full fuel" when the governor is not pulling them closed through centifugal forces and linkage. This is why they stick open.

Right. Another good way is to take the valve cover off and work the rack back and forth. We got a 4-71N with 250 hours on it out of our local scrapyard (the same place were we got our B model) because it ran away once and they scrapped it. We took the valve cover off and found that the linkage from the governer to the rack popped lose. We put a new pin in it and it's just fine now. We haven't been able to run that engine either because when they pulled it out at the scrapyard, they punched a hole in the oil pan. So it's back to that feeling of anticipation again.
