Here is a link to a simple article about what your vehicle identification number (VIN) means, at least with newer ones!

I always turn to it to verify the year of a vehicle, I can never remember what year equals what stupid letter.

I didn't know that certain digits were used by all manufacturers for the same purpose.I figured each mfg had it's own code.

Position nine, the "check" digit, is used to detect invalid VINs based on a mathematical formula that was developed by the Department of Transportation.

It's a bit unsettling to see "DOT" and "mathematical formula" in the same sentence. I would think the result would be an explosion at the very least.

I bought my truck used in Canada but since it was a 1, made in the U.S. there was no import fee, that was the best number ..1.. I ever had!!!! We will stop here.

It there was no burning sensation, then it was a good #1.
