What are the limitations for having a permit, obviously can not leave my state and haul flammables, but is there anything else I'm missing? And also i think i read somewhere that i need to have someone who has a CDL and is over 21 years of age drive with me for 6 months? If thats true I'm screwed!!!! Freightrain Posted May 1, 2012 Share Posted May 1, 2012 The permit is like having your temps for a 16 yr old. You must have a co-driver WITH a CDL with you to be legal. You don't have a timeline for taking your test, other then your temps expiring. As long as you are over 21, you can go across state lines. Only under 21 is restricted.About 10yrs ago, I took my temps and got them. About a month later I went and took the test and passed. One of my local stations has trucks to rent, so I didn't have to worry about using my B model. You don't have to go to school, unless you don't have any way of practicing. Jamied625 Posted May 1, 2012 Share Posted May 1, 2012 i just got my cdl this past summer i took a class on the weekends just for the pre trip i know in CT it was tough i dont know how it will be in NJ, espesially if you cant drive around with your permit becuase you dont have someone to drive with i would take the class. MACKS Posted May 1, 2012 Share Posted May 1, 2012 Sounds like you have a truck to drive,see if you can find someone to ride with you and teach you how to drive,plenty of retired guys out there looking to make a few extra bucks or maybe you can barter with them. 220cummins Posted May 1, 2012 Share Posted May 1, 2012 I lucked out when I got mine when I was 19. The company i was at paid for my state (PA) licensing. I had to have my permit for i think no less than 2 weeks but had to have someone over the age of 21 with a current CDL to ride along with me. I could've sworn you where aloud to drive just in the state of NJ only with a permit, i had no idea someone had to ride with me... I have only 1 uncle in my family that used to truck about 5-10 years ago. he has since retired and got a different job when hess gasoline stopped trucking there gas to their stations. Well the only thing i guess i can do is either lease the truck to someone with a driver ( Do not want to do that ), Wait till i turn 21 in 2 and a half years, or sell the truck and trailer i just bought. burnin oil Posted May 2, 2012 Share Posted May 2, 2012 Easy way of saying this.instructional permit at any age= need a 21 yo person with a CDL with you.cdl Lis under 21= in state only all by yourselfCDL Lis 21+= interstate travel.Alot of states don't require a CDL to operate air brakes. I see them all the time running around here registered at less than 26k. I actually talked to a lis examiner the other day that turned an applicant away as the rental vehicle had air brakes but didn't meet the 26,001 lb requirement of a Class A or B CDL.If your truck and trailer are under 26k combined and the trailer is less than 10k you do not need a CDL to operate it by federal DOT requirements.
