Nice!! Thanks for posting. It seems so familiar, did you take it or have it?

I can't think of a section of Hunt's Point that, in 1970, would have a building like the one in the background or where a scale would've been.

gotta love how some old Macks just look good with Retrac/Chevron mirrors on them. use to see that a lot before around 61 or 62 when back started installin the Delbar mirrow brackets standard on the b models with the bubble back mirrors. kinda odd to see an r model or u model with Retrac mirrors on it. by them Mack pretty much had their standard bracket on everything. like the nice tough spoke wheel look to.

First time for me would've been in '74, the movie "Escape from New York" reminded me of what it was like then, probably pretty much the same in the early 80's. I agree on the location, maybe the pic was marked incorrectly. If NYC, it sure does look like S.I. or eastern Queens.

I've heard some wild stories about Hunt's Point Market, especially back in the 80's. Don't know how much was true but i'm still afraid to go to New York.

Like the movie Road Warrior. The "boys " would put appropriated cars in the street to stop you,or slow you down enough to rob you and the load, If you went slow they would hop on back open the trailer and off load it as you rolled. Tons of stolen cars and trucks.....Bad Ju Ju, even the NYPD avoided the area. Hunts Point and Alphabet City were bad areas. Not so much Hunts Point now, but Alphabet City is BAD. Paul

The Hunts Point stories are probably true for the most part. Here are a few incidents that I personally witnessed.

My Dad's boss robbed outside his business at knifepoint in broad daylight. They did a lot of cash and carry business and carried a lot of cash.

Climbing into the driver's door of my Dad's truck to fetch his cigarettes only to be greeted by another kid coming through the passenger door to grab whatever he could carry.

A dead body lying on the concrete median of Halleck St for the better part of a day. Cops assumed it was a homeless person camping out.

5 or 6 hookers on each corner of Halleck St with their halter tops rolled up exposing their boobs. When a cop would approach they would quickly roll them down until he was out of sight.

I was once attacked with a barrage of glass bottles while making of coffee run. I was slightly hit by two, but got away with only one bruise on my left arm. Me being a whitey is what provoked that one.

The boss would lock a few of the nearest stray dogs in the yard at night to create the illusion that he had watchdogs. We came in one morning to find an empty hole where my Dad had parked the '70 IH 2000D and attached reefer the night before. The watchdogs were still there and still enjoying what was prolly the best meal they'd had in quite some time.

There were several incidents where a kid on foot or bicycle or an abandoned car would be in the middle of the road to cause a driver to slow down or stop, resulting in a robbery. I was with my Dad for one bicycle incident and got to see him run his trailer tandems over 2 cars.

These incidents all took place between '73-'76 when I was between the ages of 11 and 14. I was apathetic towards it because I was raised on Long Island and led to believe that this is what the south Bronx and other parts of the city were like. I didn't realise at the time how bad it actually was. Bear in mind that I was only there on and off during summer vacation fom school and on holidays. My Dad always had a story or two to share from the times I wasn't there.

Btw, the kid I encountered in the truck, the that held up the boss, and the ones that threw the bottles were all roughly the same age as me.
