Only trailers I saw that were 24 volt were either military or gravel screen plants made in Europe.

COW are small, single axle things aren't they, I am surprised  they would overload 18 ga wire with only a few lights?

Cars of the vintage we are talking only had 16 ga at most, I think most were 18 for the lights.

18g can carry 10 amps at least, how many lights did these things have?

Yeah military stuff.

The COW towers belonged to Omnipoint communications. It was back in the 90's and when they moved into a new market they set the COWs up until they could build a permanent tower. I believe these were 120 feet tall ones and all folded up for transport they were 40ish feet long. Diesel gen set up on the nose something like 100KW, and a bunch of electronics enclosures. Tool boxes full of big screw in anchors for the guy wires, outriggers on the trailer, air brakes, really a nice setup.

Pretty much just standard trailer lighting, they had just changed all the bulbs to 12 volt, but the lights were kinda dim especially on the back of them. Maybe the wire was even lighter. It's been probably close to 30 years ago. They called me after some clown tried moving one with an F600 juice brake truck and jackknifed down in Delaware

Up until Elon destroyed  Maxwell, my preferred solution for 24 volt crank/12 volt run was a 24 volt ESM from Maxwell. Charges on 12 volt, provides 24 volt cranking.

Completely "hands off"

split charge ( transformer/rectifier)  alternators and S/P switches  are distant 2nd.

Too many can't figure out S/P switches, and there are failure modes that leave the truck "dead".

T/R alternators are ok but the battery banks don't age equally.

I don't consider 24 volt crank, 12 volt run, 24 volt systems at all, they are 12 volt systems that are paralleled for cranking only.

I had a service van fitted out with two 8D's down under the body and a S/P for charging. It could start a 24 volt bus with flat batteries.  It could also jumpstart 12 volt vehicles.

also the "locals" have heard the story =true or not of the calendar produced by Mack which showed the Hi-Ho twin axle and not the O&G twin drive.  of which both companies purchased 20 + - each .

That’s where my picture came from an old mack calendar

l remember these when they were building I-86 now I-84 from Hartford Conn to the Mass line. The railroad overpass east of what is now l-291 before it was rebuilt. You could almost remove your drivers mirror on the center support if you were in the left lane. The guard rail was bolted to the center support of the bridge. The freight haulers racing down the hill east bound at exit 100 before the rest area. OH ya! Back when it was fun. lol    .....Hippy

That reminds me of years and years ago when I used to ride with my pop  through Connecticut, there was a rental outfit right off the highway. I don’t know where we were but they had gray U models and there was hundreds of them at least that’s what it look like they might’ve been maybe 30.all lined up I mentioned that a while back and somebody was familiar with the rental company and they said it was still there.  Bob
