Well sooner or later the material in close to major population centers runs out.

Boston Sand now runs trains from the Ossipee Region of NH. Huge pit a mile from my house is now a huge solar field..nice one as it is completly out of view.  Trucks are running Rt 2 all the time now to pits on northern border.

In  my "youth" Rice had the pits all along Washington Ave from the center of North Haven to the P & W plant.

Pretty soon the environmental loons on the Cape if they don't change their "Beach Nourishment" bullshit will have trailer dumps running off cape to  get sand.

When my Dad started working for EH Perkins in eastern Massachusetts back in the early 80's they had days when they were running 90-100 hired trailer dumps running bank run gravel into the greater Boston area from pits in the Littleton/Groton area.  Those would be short hauls these days!  Ed Perkins was ahead of his time when bought out the Pandolph family quarry in Sterling, MA securing a relatively close source of rock that is still in use 40+ years later.

Dave,

Are you aware Perkins sold out?  Century Aggregates from Albany bought all the Perkins facilities.  Century is Clemente.  Clemente came to US from Italy in 1903 -his grandkids run it now.  He also started Bonded ready mix in Albany . Check out their website.

PS This is my Mack on the scales at Sterling a couple of years ago. this was my post in the ATHS 45th anniversary book.  My caption was..."as I pull off the scales at the quarry I wonder if the gGranite in back of me will be on the road 60 years from now."

Always loved that post @Red Horse!

I had heard that Ed has sold to Century.  Traded a few messages with his son who shared that Ed is enjoying his retirement - though I think someone at Macungie indicated that Ed had kept some portion of the construction portion of the business.  Thank you for the additional info about Century.
