It's fargging hot out there!

Recommended Posts

The 1958 FWD has been spending the last week at the volunteer fire department where it was orginally delivered to brand new (which just happens to be my VFD....) They requested to have it in town for the 4th of July celebration. It's a small town, and the 4th still means something. The whole day is community events, including the parade in the morning and fireworks at night with a whole bunch of stuff in between. I originally said no, as I live about 40 miles away (I'm still a member there though and still do duty time, I usually bunk out in the bunkroom at least 2-3 times a month on overnights....) due to fuel costs. (about 80 bucks to run her down there and back at 3.4MPG SWAG) So they offered me $100 to bring it down, which I did at about 6am last saturday just to beat the heat.

I am glad that I did, all of the old timers from the fire company sure appreciated seeing the truck and some even had the opportunity to take her for a spin. Back in the day, one of the community events was to give out fire truck rides to the kids...but stopped about 20 years ago due to liability concerns. So many many members of the community remembered riding on her back when.

Today is predicted to be the hottest day of the year here in SE Pennsylvania, so I got u p at 4:30 this morning and drove down to the VFD in my pickup, and hopped in the FWD and brought her back up home (right near exit 67 of I-78.) The VFD is just outside of Philadelphia (Exit 343 of the Pa. Turnpike.) Brought her up Route 309. She ran just fine. I swear the Waukesha gas and the truck have the soul of a road tractor, not a firetruck because she just loves to get out there and RUN. Got back to the house about 7:30.

Now that it's 10:30 I just went outside to get the mail and my sweat was sweating. I'm gonna hunker down in the A/C today and catch up on some paperwork. Gonna try a crockpot mexican chicken chili recipe, too (but thats going outside on the deck with an extension cord...lol) Fuck the grass that can wait until tonight after the sun drops below the mountain. I hope anyone who HAS to be out there today stays cool. Drink drink drink drink your water. If you are not pissing a lot you are not drinking enough.

The kids and I cooked an egg on the dash of a junk truck yesterday - they did not belive me so I showed them - this is why you don't leave a kid or pet in the car.

Is is 9:30 here and I am back in the house for the day. I went out at 4:00 and fed some cows - yes, we had to start that crap already. None of our crops are going to make anything. We are going to have to chop the corn for silage. Cattle prices locally are in free-fall from everyone having to sell for lack of grass. I am a stubborn SOB though and I will feed mine in hopes it rains this fall.

This summer stinks.

I've stooped so low as to water "Momma's" plants in the yard, and at the shop. Been filling the skid loader bucket with water, and dumping five gallons on each young tree at the shop every other day too.

Life is easier for ole Rob that way.

97 here now, supposed to get to 104, the weather network says with the humidity it'll feel like 117. Shouldn't have mentioned my good looking garden, it's just gone, burned up. Had a good onion crop, still got hot peppers.Maybe I should only plant peppers.

update- the thermometer on the back porch says it's 104 now, and it's in the shade.

That weather network is out of Canada and it's usually more accurate than the paper or tv,and it's a free download.

Do Macks pull in once and awhile?

We don't carry Diesel :( only mack that comes here is the granite every other week. Its usually a granite day cab. Ill grab a pic next time!! Always nice drivers too. I drove the international to work one day and they guy talked my ear off wondering what i was gonna do with the truck. One guy actually owns a B Model. I asked him if he's on BMT and he had no idea what i was talking about. I gave him the site name and told him to sign up. Idk if he ever did tho. We are a small station, Only 3 pumps.

.

It has been near 105 everyday for the last two weeks here in so Illinois, with the heat index well over 110 , I'd love to be in Florida right now or at least around some form of water... All the crops are shot , this is going to be a very bad year .. And I haven't seen rain for months ...things are not looking up for business later in the year or next year .... Yikes

I heard they are chopping silage already by you guys. Corn won't make anything even if it does rain now. We have had less than an inch of rain since mid April. This will affect a lot of guys........farmers will have less jingle in their pockets to buy nicer trucks, newer farm equipment, and they might put off pouring that concrete slab they have been wanting?

Very much so.... Yes the have been bailing the corn , I guess the insurance company agreed it will not make anything.. Our big jobs last year were all on local farms pouring floors in their buildings, putting up grain bins , etc .. Kinda scary what this might do, not just for us but everyone that has to buy groceries and so on . I hope it's not as bad as it seems

They use it to feed cattle around here, they either bail it and wrap it in plastic or pile it in piles and cover it with plastic ..... So there will be plenty of it around being these fields full of corn are not going to be good for anything but silage

yep, to take it further, they cut the corn with with a "forage harvester"- we call it a "silage cutter" around here. Usually done in September around here. It cuts/chops the whole stalk of corn into silage, then put into silos or a silage pit to feed cattle during the winter. To be cutting corn for silage this time of year is bad...real bad. Not so much cutting it for silage now is bad, but to have to be feeding it now is.
