I know I will probably get crap for this but how many union workers does it take to work a dump truck? Idk never seen it done. But if the post is correct that it takes 2 that is just sad.So who engages the pto or is that another person?

Union guys please don't take offense...I used to be in the Operating Engineers and their motto was "A fair day's pay for a fair day's work". If we put in a good day's work and be reasonable with our employer, perhaps we can start to buy our country back from China. When I hear of guys making way more than others, or having to hire a separate guy to operate the body or whatever, somebody is paying for that. Guess who? You and me.

I've never been really pro or con union-wise,but i have seen in person some of the wasteful BS unions do,when i drove for Atlas Van Lines,we were contracted to deliver all the inside furnishings for the Resorts International Hotel/Casino,the job had to be done at night,we were warehousing everything. So we had a 8/9:00 pm dock time being as Atlantic City is all "Union" we (non-union drivers) were not even allowed in the trailers! the job was done on a floor by floor basis,so we would arrive with a mixed load of pretty much everthing that goes into a hotel,and the "un-loaders" were all un-employed (in their trades) union members,so anything made of wood,had to be pushed by carpenters,TV's lamps etc. by electricians and so on and so-fourth,what should have been a 4 hour job usually ended up taking between 8-12 hours! 1 hour break every 2 hours,2 hour "lunch" most of them came back drunk! and dare say anything about it it,or you would be "bounced" we even had to have "special" union "waivers" to go into our own trailers and secure all our equipment (straps,pads,decking bars etc.) of course the moving budget for the project went approx.$400,000 over budget,a fact my boss was not happy about! took 18 weeks longer than it should have,tied up our warehouse and 75 trailers for months! needless to say,that was our last venture dealing with union moves in Atlantic City!.....................................Mark

Not technically "Jersey Brockways" but i always liked this picture,i used to run with a bunch of these Defazio drivers up and down 81 on my nightly trip to Binghampton,NY some real characters! i took this picture at the Penn-Can truckstop in Harford,PA one afternoon when we decided to stop and eat...................................Mark

I always liked those orange Defazio 359's.

yup, me to, i always stop at Penn Cann everytime i got to Macungie, they make the best choc shakes around haha. why cant any of the newer trucks have nice paint and letterin on the truck and trailer anymore?? seems everything was better 20-40 years ago. think i missed out

I grew up in Wind Gap PA right of of Route 33. The Defazio trucks would stop and eat at the diners. You could hear them a mile away..

yup, me to, i always stop at Penn Cann everytime i got to Macungie, they make the best choc shakes around haha. why cant any of the newer trucks have nice paint and letterin on the truck and trailer anymore?? seems everything was better 20-40 years ago. think i missed out

I find them old Defazio trucks in the woods some times around here.......they had a yard outside of Avoca PA

Old rumor they were so cheap they wouldn't spec the trucks with deck plates,,,,,,they used plywood and the frames rusted bad under the wood

Cheap, but compassionate. Not very many daycab fleets in the northeast were sporting rooftop a/c units back then. It seems that most of theirs had them,

I always try and stop at Penn-Can when i'm up that way,always had a real good "open face" roast beef sammich and homemade coleslaw.............................................Mark

The 359 Brockway sits off I-84 on the hillEastbound side after the split with I-380. You can only see it going Eastbound it has a 290 cummins 10 speed Roadranger owned by a friend of me. Joe D.

Jim George and Eddie have another garage in Throop,Pa. with a few more trucks in it A nice restored what I think is a 155 and a restored 361 single axle 6-71,13 speed, another 361 long wb. tandem 290 Cummins 9 or 10 speed in nice shape.Joe D.

The Brockway was made in Cortland NY, about an hr away from me. I drove a Mackway (Brockway with the mack cab) a few times for a asphalt company I used to work for.

The usual driver of that truck used to work for Brockway and told me the story of why Mack shut the plant down, what a shame.

Seems, as he told it, that the Brockway workers union had negotiated a new contract with Mack, and according to him Mack had agreed to almost all of they had asked for. Then the Mack workers negotiated theirs and had gotten a better deal (probably asked for more), when the Brockway union found out they went back and demanded more. Mack basically said no, so they threatened to strike and was told that if they strike that they would be shut down.

They went out on strike and Mack shut the plant down. Stupid.

The old plant stood for years until Rubbermaid cut a deal with NY state and Cortland county, for big tax breaks and a new plant. So they tore down the Brockway plant and built a new plant there for Rubbermaid. 7 years later when the tax break deal was over Rubbermaid packed their bags and left.

There is a Brockway club in Cortland and every year they shut a street down and have their "Brockway days" truck show. Some real sharp Huskies show up for it.
