Superdog's EQU with sleeper

I was poking around in the barn at Mike Harbison's and I knew I had not gotten lost because I saw this:

I tripped over a engine:

then I looked off the right and I see cab after cab, after cab:

Then I turn back around and way in the back, I barely make out this:

I sucked a little air, and then went over to check out this rare dog:

It has a Mack fifth wheel:

a neat old WATCH YOUR STEP SIGN:

Wood door frame:

Air brakes:

Mechanical two? speed rear axle - look at the rod going to the cab:

I wanted to sit in it, but lost my nerve:

It really is a neat old truck. The frame and mechanical parts are very straight and not pitted. I doubt there is a nicer unrestored one left on this earth, especially with the sleeper cab.

It looks like a great retirement project for Mike one of these days if he could ever force himself to stop hauling those dern hogs..............

I've never been able to find out how many EQU's were built with sleepers,but it is the only one I've ever run across,in pics or real life.Seen a few EHU sleepers,but no EQU's.Also the only Mack 5th wheel I've ever seen with Mack in the pedastals as well as the plate.It came to Iowa in the early '80's from Louisana,my late friend Mike Pagel purchased it from the 2nd owner,along with a single axle Fruehauf bunker blower reefer of the same vintage.It was being used by the owners of a small produce market.I traded Mike out of it about a year before he was killed and it went from his barn right into mine.Wish I coulda got the trailer with it,but he wanted it to put behind an old Diamond T.It had the Fruehauf "differential dual" set up,very rare to see today.Hard to explain without pics,but the tires would spin independently on the same hub.

someone had a Mack fifth wheel like that for sale in wheels of time or double clutch about 10 years ago, same thing with Mack on the pedestals.

Thanks again for letting me poke around in there - I just edited the post, I had it down as a EGU - I was so excited about it when you told me what it was I forgot!

I was at a junk yard once and they were cutting up an old trailer that had that type of axle, each wheel would spin independently of each other, they were not bolted on together. Once again, I did not know what I was looking at, and it went to the furnace to come back here as a toyota gas tank strap!

I will consider it when it is the middle of an Iowa winter. I only crawl up in old sleepers and hunt rabbits when it is cold enough to kill off all the worms.
