you easterns have all the luck with big steam.love the big steam engines.specially on my HO layout.BIG BOYS,CAB FORWARDS,611 of NORFOLK WESTERN.all we have here in town is a little saddle tank 2-8-0 on a 5 mile run.logging engine and a 42 ton shay not running.

Bob, I have had the pleasure of riding on an excursion train with canuk power- Canadian Northern 2-8-2 Mikado (built by the Canadian Locomotive Company, Kingston Works Ontario, Canada, 1917) which is now owned and operated by STEAMTOWN National Historic Site, Scranton Pennsylvania. The excursion ran from Scranton to Moscow, Pa. (about 20 miles) where everyone was dropped off, then the train reversed back past the station by about a mile, and then did a run by at 40mph and what a site. I have a ton of pics and a video of it on my facebook page.

Had the pleasure of riding behind N & W "J " class northern #611 from Lexington,Ky. to Chattanooga, Tenn.

and return, back in the fall of 1983 or 1984? Can't remember which.

It's now retired to the Roanoke Transportation Museum. What a shame!!!

If they ever bring her out of retirement I'll be the first in one in line for a ticket!

I think your steamtown also has a sister to our CPR Royal Hudson too.Ours is the 2860 but isn't running right now.Went from Vancouver to Squamish along the shore.beautiful trip

Hi Bob

photo of one of the last "steam ups" for 2860.... parked awaiting serious funding for a boiler overhaul... got to go to Kamloops for steam now, unless you consider Thomas the Tank Engine a 'real' locomotive...LOL

photo taken about 100ft from where my Mack is now stored.

man... 611 needs to get back out on the rails. I would love to see NW611 and the Y6 mallet make a return to the rails some day. they are some of the nicest and biggest locos that are operational but sidlined due to FRA regs or lack of intrest by its owners.

here is a vid I took of SP 4449 a few years back coming through roundout IL on its way back from the big steam convention in MI

The Cuyahoga Valley Line here in my area used to run steam back in the 80's-90's. I have a button, "I rode behind 4070". The engine is owned by Midwest Railway preservation society.

http://www.midwestrailway.org/#./images/1.jpg

I was up there this past spring at their open house. Very cool stuff, I have pics of 4070 getting a rebuild. I'd love to join up and be part of it! It is just a haul to get there and I don't seem to have enough time for my own junk let alone that. Someday.

The Cuyahoga line now use one F and ? something else to move their cars from Canton to Cleveland. One at each end, depending on the direction they travel.

I'm not much of a train guy, but I know what this is....

BIG BOY........

saw it from the freeway up on a hill somewhere near Lincoln Nebraska, I think??, had to drive around the side streets to find it, not really set up for easy access but it is BIG.

There are no more UP 4-8-8-4 "Big Boys" in operating condition left in existence. As you can imagine, it would cost millions of dollars to bring them up to operational condition- re-tooling the (2) boilers and superheaters alone would cost a few million.

HOWEVER...Union Pacific does maintain UP 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" #3985 in full operating condition. The Challengers were the little brothers to the Big Boys. Here are a few videos....

And, since UP doesnt like to waste any motive power and get every nickel they can by moving revenue freight with whatever power happens to be available, here is a video of Challenger 3985 pulling 145+ cars of freight when returning from a passenger excursion a few years ago. Note how she makes the curve and up the grade without even slowing down, batting an eye or breaking a sweat.

If I recall apl lines had helped set this up if you notice all the containers were apl... I got to see this loco once when it came near Chicago...was very impressive. I have seen the challenger that's parked in north platt NB and want to stop to seethe bid boy and ddx40 as you enter the state on I-80. The up tower in north platt is worth a stop if your heading that way. I think it's the countrys largest rail yard.? I'm heading to Baltimore next week I plan to stop at the b&o museum. They have lots of steam locos to view...

Great pics and videos. Nothing like the sound of a steam engine and its Whistle!

EDIT!

I stand corrected, a horn is on a Diesel locomotive and a whistle is on a steam locomotive.

Nickel Plate 765 coming around Horshoe Curve in Pennsylvania on an excursion this past weekend. I wanted to be there but could not make it. The guy running the camera was all over the place but the sound is awesome...turn up the volume!!!

I was going east on rt. 22 once and took this picture of a train with a load of military vehicles going around the horse shoe curve.
