I believe (at least on the earlier R's) the 686 calls out an ENDT 676 engine and the 690 is a later code for all Maxidyne 6 cylinder engines. S was for a 6 wheel chassis and X was for severe duty chassis.......Course I'm probably wrong.. Oh and it's 730 days difference :)

Aww hell Ill do it, 2 years! The two are basically the same truck just differences of year model options, like engine and chassis designation as severe duty, however I have been wrong before.

When Mack went away from it's old number/engine code, the 690 covered the Maxidyne family of 6 cylinder engines, and 688 (which used to be the code for the E6-350) covered the Econodyne family of engines.686 was the old code for aENDT676 "300 series" Maxidyne, and later also covered the E6-285 and EM6-300 before it was dropped in favor of the 690 code.

Hahah I was asking for that.

Both trucks in question are Tri-axles. The 690s have T2070 maxi torques and the 686sx's have the 5 speed two stick.

I gotta check the door tags to see what the rears are on the 690's are, because they're definitely different (flat axle cover and more squarish spokes). The 690s also have eaton air lockers, but I guess they can be aftermarket?

So basically the only thing different was engine, trans, and rears. Thanks for the info. I'm only 24 but I like to learn about the old stuff I get to drive.

It's one year older than me, allow me to feel youthful!

You are youthful compared to most of the grey beards here.....'cept me :whistling:

I spent some time as a driver supervisor, trust me, you'll go far if you keep cleaning the old trucks. Don't let anyone get you down about it, smile at being the butt of the jokes from the other drivers because most likely your bosses DO notice your extra effort and enthusiasm! Best of luck!

sounds like they will be very similar to drive.,

Macks with a 2070 commonly had that big overdrive but slow rear gears, your max speed was in the 62-68 MPH. same goes with the 2 stick 6 speed. direct trans and 4.17 rears made it a 62MPH truck.

Personly I like the 2 stick out of those 2 transmissions. the 2070 was kinda weird. sometimes with a normal load you needed to take off in the low side other times not. where the 2 stick 6 speed would just about walk away in 1st direct all the time.

and good on ya for looking after them old trucks. learn to drive one of them and you become a real trucker that stands above the rest.

yep.... thats exactly why I did not like them. to slow in the first 2 gears for anything on road... then all the big steps afterwards. ever driven a 12 speed..... those are perfect for all your needs.

Best tranny mack ever made! Terry

MMMM...trtxl 1070, why did they stop making that awesome piece of mechanical achievement, I dont think I ever found a speed or a load I couldnt get into the power band with that thing and some 4.42 rears.
