Have a ch Mack with 427 motor and am getting a tapping/ tappet noise under full load/boost it is not evident when just driving around unladen. fjh Posted October 24, 2012 Share Posted October 24, 2012 judging by your coments Look for exhast leaks at manifold gaskets, There is also a vaque possiblity of a blown head gasket by your description! Cal8544 Posted October 24, 2012 Author Share Posted October 24, 2012 Thanks fjh for the quick reply I'll check those gaskets it's sounds like sharp taps more metal sounding I guess almost like pinging that you would get from a petrol engine...I was thinking maybe the turbo itself might be on its way out too and it could be making a racket ... fjh Posted October 24, 2012 Share Posted October 24, 2012 If you suspect the turbo take the inlet tube off and look at the wheel if it has been rubbing the housing or if you can physiclly make wheel the touch houseing the turbo is definatly suspect I have seen the adjusting nuts break if it has a jake brake but the noise would be continuous and your would have a poping sound in the intake! burnin oil Posted November 12, 2012 Share Posted November 12, 2012 Just fixed the same problem in my pickup. Blew the gasket between the manifold and turbo. Sounded really bad under load going through a tunnel. So bad I was about to turn it off and coast rather than listen to that racket for another 1/4 mile!
