If you tap on the cat you can hear if its coming apart because it will rattle. By popping are you saying the engine is back firing? Did you crawl under the truck while its running to hear where the grinding is coming from?

If it didn't rattle the cat is most likely will be good. Also a bad cat could give off a sulfur / bad egg smell. Did you go under the truck and hear where this noise is coming from yet?
