Hey, I have a Facebook group for Mack Fire trucks and a question has come up. I was always told the B model numbers were odd for diesel and even for gas. There is a B-85 that they tell me is gas. It also says Thermodyne on the hood, which I always thought was the open chamber, direct injection diesel. Anyone offer some clarification? I tried researching, but I have not found anything.

B model fire trucks were all odd numbered.Don't ask me why.

The Thermodyne also reffered to the overhead valve Mack gas engines, the flatheads were Magnadynes.

B75F, B85F, B95F B125F are Firetruck designations, and were available as gas or Diesel. The first Mack Diesel Firetruck was sold in 1960 and went to Bermuda.

B75 was a 464 or 510 Gas with a 750 GPM Pump

B85 was a 707 Gas , 711 Diesel with a 750 GPM pump

B95 was a 707 Gas,711 Diesel, or Hall Scott with a 1000 GPM pump

B125 was a 707 Gas,711 Diesel or Hall Scott with a 1250 GPM pump

Let me toss a question in the ring. I see b models with different designations even though most look the same. How do you tell the difference ? I know some of the cab designs changed a bit but is that it?

Actually the cabs didn't have anything to do with the model, because most models had different cab options, sleeper, standard, concave, etc. The desiginations had to do with GVW rating, application& engine used.

bet thats a rare breed of emblem to run across. this one looks to never had any emblems on the hood. also pics from the factory and in the Mack B model firetruck book show no hood emblems. kinda odd since Mack made up emblems for every other little thing , B422, B421, B615, etc.

Very interesting info , anyone knows if that kind of info is available for R's ??

if you search back thru the old posts, I went thru an extensive list of the model #/engine codes for Mack went to with the introduction of the Fmodel, which carried into the U,R,DM,MB,etc.
