"In 1941-42 for sappers Mack built 700 cabover tractors NJU1 (4x4) with the EN532 engine (8,7 l, 136 hp), 10-speed transmission and pneumatic brakes. The trucks were used to tow the pontoon elements. The tractors had a big box behind the cab, where was located a winch, hitch-mechanisms and cables. Variants: Mack NJU1 - the truck to transport the pontoon elements. Some of these trucks were used by British troops in Egypt. In 1941 about 700 units were produced. Mack NJU2 - the truck without cargo box behind the cab. Used for carrying semi trailers of Topographic Service. In 1941, 8 units were made. All trucks had closed cab the same with the commercial model series C. Behind the front bumper a winch was located. Totally about 708 units were made."

Looks like a propane tank for a cab heater; similar to those used in crane cabs.

It is a Sherman M4A1 Air cleaner assembly.

You know what? Next time I go to Nana and Papa's, I'll march my butt right out to the barn and pull the freaking 2X4 out from under it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
