Today I went out and did some investigating on my almighty 8V71, only to find that I am facing every Detroit Diesel owner's worst nightmare: A STUCK RACK (Gasp!!!) So I'm wondering what the magical technique I can use to cure this dilema so as to not get a connecting rod in my stomach when I go to fire it up. Is there way to break the injectors loose without using any extra special tools? If not, where can I get an injector tool? I want to move towards getting this motor running and that is a major setback. So if anybody knows the cure, could you please enlighten me? Thanks a lot :D

Ben

get some valve cover gaskets and pop the covers athen you will be able to work the rack by handshould be able to see the issue, I have had some luck just tapping the injector with a small brass hammer after coating the rack with penetrating oil, we have a ton of Detroits here at CSX everything from 3-53's to 8-92's and I have seen a stuck rack about 10 times so far after a machine has sat in the weeds unused for a while most can be tapped and poked and prodded back to life.

Well I figured out that it's the right side rack that's stuck. I tried taking a small piece of wood and tapped it with a hammer but the rack didn't move. I didn't wanna hit it too hard for fear of bending/breaking something. What doesn't make sense to me is that it seems like all 4 of the injectors on that side are loose but the rack still isn't moving. Why would that be? About 3 months ago I checked and everthing was free so it just locked up recently.

So what you're saying is............if the rack is still stuck after the 4 lbs. of C4, then try a 20lb. sledge? How should I shape the charge to dislodge the rack? Like a triangle to concentrate the force? Like a little bunny rabbit friend of the gopher?

Take the 4 lb block of C-4 and place it on the side of the engine block, stand back about 1000 yards and detonate and that should un-stick the rack and cure the oil leaks as well.

A detroit can also be used for its OTHER intended purpose, moved from the rear,to the front of the ship.........................................Mark

Mark, this is true however if used for that purpose it should only be after emptying the crankcase of oil and giving the whole oily thing a good through steam cleaning, wouldnt want to pollute 12 miles of shoreline.

You are correct, perhaps i should have issued an EPA warning/disclaimer! think of the poor fish, seals and everything else poisoned by oil!..............................Mark

So I should blow it up with C4 then pound all the pieces back together with a 20lb sledgehammer so I can use it for a boat anchor?

Ben

Yes, this is an industry-accepted practice for 2-stroke Detroits.

You could just go staight to "boat anchor" and save time. As for the oil, it likely already leaked out. Another option is a lawn ornament. poke.gif

On a serious note, if the injector racks are free, then the linkage is stuck. Try spraying Blaster on all the moving parts and let them soak for a few days.

Ben... hold off on the C4..!!!!

do you have the later Injector Control Tubes with the individual spring-loaded rack levers???

the older rigid tube/lever jammed all injectors if one stuck, newer type elimanted this issue, though you still have to deal with the injector that is stuck..

generally, if the newer individual spring tubes are installed the air intake flap can be deleted...

if you have the DD V71 bible.. it is chapter 2.9 of the service manual

Hell! them old detriots were so tough i don't thank c4 would do nothing but black up the side of the block, it would probly land back on the ground runing, and yes it would be leaking a little oil out of the inspection plates!!LOL
