wow, you just can't stay out of that Superliner, gotta go bobtailing on the snow and ice,eh? That's great though, i'm glad you're enjoying it and glad you got unstuck and didn't have a huge wrecker bill to pay.

Pffft! Throw a small shovel in the truck with you for next time. At the very least, you could've cleaned off enough of the road to get yourself moving again. I once spent 3 hours backing up an icy hill....loaded to 80,000 pounds....which is why I now carry tire chains on the truck in the winter. Would've taken 10 minutes to chain up, back up, and remove the chains IF I'd had them at the time. Instead, I backed up as far as I could...set the brakes....chopped & shoveled 10-15 feet behind the drives, between the drives, and 3' in front of the drives...roll forward onto the clean spot...chop & shovel where the drives had been sitting....then back up as far as it'd go again before setting the brakes and repeating the process. A cop even showed up as I was nearing the top and asked me if I needed him to call a wrecker....told him "I've got it this far up the hill myself...I think I can manage to get it the rest of the way." Wasn't like I was in anybody's way....road was closed at the bottom of the hill for construction. I was only there because I had seen the "road closed .9 miles ahead" sign from the other direction and thought I had to go around the closure to get to where I was delivering because it was about a mile up the road. About half way down the hill I got to thinking "This shit ain't been cleared....I bet the road doesn't go through" and got on the brakes in time to slide to a stop 2' before crashing through the road closed sign and the 1' dropoff where the pavement had been dug up.

If you're driving a truck, you're bound to find yourself in a situation or two. It helps if you've got a few things to help get you out of 'em....and in the winter time, a shovel is a minimum. Kitty litter/gravel/sand can also help. Tire chains aren't as necessary, but like I said above, having them can save you some time & effort.

Whew!! Leslie, you must be livin' right! Around here,in the "Corruption State" ,you would have had 3 State Troopers,2 locals,at least 1 county mountie & 2 wreckers and the guy with the tractor would be told to get lost by the authorities! Glad you got out of that one without too much trouble!

IF YOU BOUGHT IT, A TRUCK BROUGHT IT..AND WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH IT, A TRUCK WILL HAUL IT AWAY!!! Big John Trimble,WRVA

I found a square point shovel some place I delivered to one time. They had thrown it away because the handle was broken off, it was less than 2 feet long. I picked it up and put it in one of my tool boxes. Still carry it...never actually used it, but I still carry it around.

What doesn't kill you will make you stronger. You learned two things from this: What your truck can and cannot not do under those conditions and what to do if you find yourself in a similar situation in the future. I'd say it was a productive day.

I thought this was heading in that direction. The lucky part was that the trooper actually cancelled the wrecker and then left.

Gotta love mack trucks, even with air ride you got it out, if you have a deep low gear in your trans and low rears try this, turn on the power divider, pull forward slowly a few feet or let the tires turn slowly a little to make sure it locks then stop completely and set the parking brakes put it in as low a gear as you've got and ease the clutch out on the throttle this divides the power to all 4 drives even without axle locks worked for me several times in a stuck dump truck.

My parking brakes apply on all 4 drives....and they flat-out hold. Even loaded to 80,000 pounds and parked on a hill, my truck won't roll. If I tried moving the truck with the parking brakes applied, I'd either stall the engine or break some part of the drive line.

...now if the spring brakes didn't hold all that well, it would be a possibility...but if that were the case, I'd be looking into WHY they don't hold all that well. When I set the brakes & walk away, I don't want to worry about whether or not the truck is going to stay put.

Without a limited slip rearend, I always kinda rode the brakes lightly to try to force the power to the wheel with traction. Gets you going sometimes.

No doubt, someone was looking over your shoulder when the cop drove away without looking at anything. Sometimes you're the dog, sometimes your the hydrant.

In all fairness I've had no issues with state troopers, I've had speeding tickets in both Ohio an PA and the troopers were cordial in both circumstances. The PA trooper even bumped my speed down 6 mph to keep me out of more serious trouble (I was clocked at 71 in a 55 :pat: )

It was with locals and a few DOT officers that I've had issues.

Great story! and beautiful truck too (jealous) This reminds me of when there was no work to do a few years ago in the construction business. People were on strike. I took a job at menards distribution center (worst job ever) I had a delivery to make in the morning. i left in my R ( my R was modifed to where i get rid of the air controlled wipers and did the electronic conversion with delay on it) Well, about 20 minutes after being loaded on my way to my delivery, My fuse for the wipers goes out. It was POURING OUT. I was a dumbass and kept driving. I had rainex on and it helped me enough but the whole time i was thinking, this place don't pay me enough and its not like im getting a medal for getting this stupid load there on time lol. I think i was more of a dumbass than you :)

Maybe I misunderstood, sounded like not only did he get stuck and got lucky and got out without a tow but the trooper didn't notice or care that the truck had no plates on it possibly not registered or insured..

Might have had a different outcome if it wasn't so cold outside. It's hibernating season for bears. :)
