cb radio positive ground system

looking for some tips on how to hook up a cb radio on a b model positive ground system

any help would be appreciated

Unless you can find a CB radio with an ungrounded case, you'll have to convert the truck to negative ground.

I've hooked up many cb's in positive ground F models and my B model, you just have to hook them up "backwards"- you have to ground the hot (fused) wire on the radio, run the other to the switch or what ever power source you're tapping into.

Use to do this many times for guys at our place.

You have to mount the radio in a box or with rubber to keep it insulated from the chassis ground.

Then just hook the ground of the truck which is positive to the red (pos.) lead on the radio and the hot side of the truck which is negative to the black (neg.) lead on the radio.

You also have to insulate the antenna from chassis ground because it also feeds ground back to the radio through the coax cable.

A radio guy told me one time to cut the ground in the coax cable and install a resistor in line with it and you wouldn't need to insulate the antenna. also this would not affect the ground plane of the antenna and make it work much better which it did. Unfortunately I can't remember the value of the resistor.

Maybe someone else can help you with the resistor value you would need for this.

There our also many people that sell power inverters for antiques which would also probably do the job although they are as a rule a little on the pricey side.

you can do it just as 39 baby mack said, but it has to be insulated or you get a wisp of smoke. dont let any od the cb touch metal.

You can use one of these and not worry about insulating the radio or antenna.

Just switch to negative ground and get it over with- The insulating the radio BS and inverters ultimately fail anyway. Or get one of the $40 battery powered handheld CBs. Better yet, get a ham license and leave the clowns on 11 meters behind!

ya,as tom said just hook the black wire to the juice wire,,,use a tester to see witch wire is live.then ground the red..good luck...bob

that's all I ever did Bob, and they worked fine. Got one in the mixer now that works fine, I never did any of that other stuff.

Dear gentlemen this bring back a lot of memery's I ran a lot of R models back in the early 80"s mast were posative ground unit , I took the ash tray out and mounted a piece plywood over the top of the dash board . put my cb radio and an AM/ FM radio on this. Could hook is up in any unit I had to run, THe radio"s were insulatied from the thruck just grounded throw the antenna mount on the mirror bracket
