Hello everyone,

I am looking to purchase a 1960s B61 Thermodyne. It has tandem axles, quadruplex tranny (18 speed) and a full size 14 foot steel bed. I was wonder if you guys can give me idea of how much it weights?

The other issue is my trailer: its a single axle 15 ton lowboy trailer with a 20 ft long flat area. The dump truck is 26 ft long I think I can rig something and get it to work. However, how is the weight distribution of the dump truck? How should I load it to get the most weight on the tongue?

Thank you, Gio

Id like to say I can help ya but theres not enough info there to tell you much, I have no idea what it weighs, ius it double frame? triple?, does it have 52,000rears? I am lost on the lowboy thing too, I am picturing a lowboy triler with a king pin that goes behind a tractor, are you asking if you can add a fifth wheel and remove the bed? Im kinda lost here.

It's hard to see but I think the axle bearing caps have 8 bolts and I think that means 55000 rears. I'd guess it is about 30,000# for the sake of arguement, particularly if it has a double frame. Don't hold me to it though.

Good luck.

Sorry to have lost you guys, its a doubled wall and I have no clue about the rear axles.

The lowboy is the old style trailer that goes behind a fifth wheel semi truck. I will use the lowboy to transport the mack to BHM.

Typical tractor is around 15K, so add the weight of the steel bed? 8-10K and you're at 25K easy. And that is likely a bit on the low side, but close guesstimate.

Not sure how you are going to get 26ft of truck onto a 20ft trailer? Leave the rear tandems hang off the back? You'll have a hard time getting on the trailer and away from the ramps with it hanging off the back. I bet the tail end is a touch heavier then the front, maybe not by much.

I was planning on removing the rear tires on the furthest axle and load it backwards on the lowboy and let the truck slide over the front part of the trailer. The ramps will be chained to the front bumper. But I am not sure, it this thing weights over 15 ton I will bail out. "When in doubt, be a chicken" kinda thing :-).

I was gonna guess it to be closer to 20-25,000, I had several R model tri axles with 16' bodies that were all under 28,000, one was only 24,640, my 04 Granite tri axle was 26,240 with a Ox barrel body that was 3/8" thick AR400 and 44k rears, double frame, etc.

i spoke with the owner last night and based on the emblems on the hood its a B61. I was going to ask him to check on the manufacture plate but the way I see it it does not matter. I am buying it as a B61 and it will be a bonus if turns to be a B52. Btw, the pictures that he send me shows its a triple framed. Owner believes it weights no more than 30k so my lowboy should handle it fine.

yup, agree. single axle B61 with a quadbox weighs around 12,000, add the trunion and other axle its probably around 18, plus the box and that thing looks to have a lightweight cheap box on it so id say your def under 30,000. probably more around 24 or 25,000
