At Trucktoberfest 2012, I had the opportunity to drive a M-drive truck/trailer around the track. I also was able to drive a Granite dump with Allison too. Posted June 30, 2013 Share Posted June 30, 2013 That CF ladder truck was marketed by Mack as the "Bulldog 1" in conjunction with Hahn Fire Apparatus (Hamburg Pa.) who made and mounted the aerial ladder. They were not extremely popular but did sell a few here and there.That particular one was recently donated to the Museum by a local VFD- who rather than sell it for it's fair market value (essentially the scrap price) donated it instead and did some kind of tax write-off. I seem to remember that they had this little problem of the fly sections moving past the stops. One department I know of has a Hahn ladder mounted on an "MC" chassis. Bridgewater, NH has a 1981 "Bulldog I", formerly in service in Ogunquit, ME. rsb502 Posted June 30, 2013 Share Posted June 30, 2013 That's pretty much what I hear too,i could see some benefit to it,i've always wondered how well they would "hold" while jake is on on a steep downgrade?...................................................Markif its an automated manual like the M-Drive and the Eaton autoshift, its actually in gear just like your truck is now it just has shift solenoids and a computer telling them when to shift instead of you doing it, unless you push the buttons to shift it or hold a gear that is. if its an Allison it should put the torque converter in lockup as soon as the engine brake is enabled so its pretty good, not as good as a manual but if its all running right its hard to tell the difference. The whole experiment with Mack using outside builders to finish their trucks did not work out too well. Too many cooks spoil the broth type thing. Didn't get a chance to use the "jake" on the Granite.Yeah the centrifical clutches on auto shift trucks aren't the best for low speed work. I was helping move some new Freightliners locally with eaton autoshifts, it was a pain in the butt to get it to slip under the trailer smoothly I would hate to try to use one on a job site. Allison's are freaking sweet down low, I've used buses and trucks with em and they were all smooth to drive. RFCDrum Posted July 1, 2013 Share Posted July 1, 2013 Drove quite a few Allisons in Macks and Western Stars. It's like driving a bus or fire truck. They were ok sometimes loaded the trans would take it's sweet time to drop a gear. The take off from a stop was pretty good. The Western Star had a 6 speed Allison world trans in her and it would only let you pre select down to 2nd gear. I was working out of Plaza Materials quarry at night on asphalt and there is a steep grade to the scale and in second with the Pac Brake on 3rd stage I still had to tap the brakes.
