Pre-electric farm tractors were "hand crank" started. And many with electric start could be hand cranked. The crank provisions ended in the early 1960s. I remember my dad cranking our AC WC. My dad "lost" the original crank for the WC but a WD (different shape) worked. I would like to find an original crank for the WC. My grandfather's WD and C both had provisions for cranks although they were equipped with electric start. My Cockshutt 570 Super Diesel has an opening and claw on the front engine damper. I should would not like to hand start that beast. BTW, I never hand cranked an engine and hope I never have to.

Early JD two-cylinders had a compression release on each cylinder. And they did not use a crank. You grabbed the flywheel (exposed) and used it to start engine.

Some vids...in the first video at 0:06 and 0:38 is opening the compression release.

Another JD hand start video. This tractor does not have a compression release.

"L" model fire trucks had hand crank starting, if needed. Fortunately, I never had to do it, those trucks started right up (most of the time). The hand crank for the booster reel

was also the starter crank.
