To look for a shorted circuit under the valve cover unplug the wire to the head and with a jumper wire one end connected to the pos side of the battery and use the other end of the jumper lead to tough the connector going into the head. If there is short inside of the head you will have smoke and the wire will burn into before you can drop it. This is called the smoke test. It you have just a small sparkle then sounds to be ok but if no sparkle then its a open circuit.

Just pull the valve cover and check it out, could be a pinched wire, could be a bad solenoid and it could just be the insulation bad on the bulkhead plug thru the side of the riser, not a big deal really.

P.s. I don't recommend the smoke test if you like your truck,lol!
