Non-detergent oils allow the crap in the oil to settle out. This is normally used in engines with no filter.

Detergent oils keep the crap in suspension, so it will travel to the filter and be filtered out.

For what it's worth...

As a general rule, however:

(1) Some is better than none, and...

(2) Clean is better than dirty.

Use modern 15w-40 oil such as Delo or Rotella. Detergent oils will keep the dirt in suspension, even if you don't have an effective filter it will keep the engine in better shape by allowing you to drain the contaminants with the oil.

Money, sex, and fire; everybody thinks everyone else is getting more than they are!
