I'm in the market for a brand new truck 2013/2014,will be having a crane/boom mounted on it,to be used for taking down trees.I'm thinking a Granite with at least 400 h.p. but for years I've been hearing horror stories about the new emissions motors that all the manufacturers are using.I don't want to pay 130,000 or more for a truck that's always at the dealer getting fixed.I know a lot of guys have been trying to buy chassis's that are pre-emission but in my opinion those trucks are getting older every year and are going to have problems simply because they are used.Also it's hard to find a chassis spec'ed the way I want it and also hard to get the bank on board for a project like that.The easiest way to do it is buy the whole setup brand new.It's hard to beat new!!but I'm hoping since the emission's motors have been out for a while,maybe they've worked the bugs out?I'm looking for some feedback from guys who run these new trucks.

Buy a Western Star with a 13 liter 470 hp Detroit, the motor is I think? the only motor on the market built for 2013 Ems. from ground up and I have not gotten any bad feed back, I will be buyin a couple a new one this year, but the glider kits with the pre EGR motors that I have run better then an get better fuel mi then an are lighter then the new ones

BUY A GLIDER KIT AND POWER WITH ENGINE OF CHOICE

I was told that by law if you buy a glider have to put an emissions motor in an emissions era chassis.Im sure I could put any motor I want in it if I were going to do the work in my garage but that's not the case

If you want a Granite buy the Granite. Some people love the new trucks and some people hate them. Most of the people who dislike the new Macks are the old school injection pump gray engine guys. Alot of big fleets are still running Mack and Volvo and its not because they're junk. Besides, all new trucks are having problems. Next time someone says the new Mack are junk, ask they what year Mack they have, I bet its a 1997 or older.

I am a diehard Mack man and I did have a 2012 Granite,505 18spd. Power and fuel economy was good BUT I had problems with coolant leaks and had it to the dealer five times and never got it fixed. Other small issues too. I loved that truck. Like was said in another post, a dealer can make ya or break ya! I sold it a month ago with only 10,000 miles on it.

I got a 2013 Western Star glider with a 6nz Cat in it. My local Cat garage treats me VERY good.

Tree98 I had and have some of the same concerns! I'm getting a new truck built this year! I just stepped out on Faith that the new one will save me less problems than the older ones! How I see it with the older ones you have parts, labor, and down time! With the new ones you may just have mostly downtime if something go wrong! Hopefully with emission problems being around for a while you would think that the American mechanics great minds and Technology has come up with Solutions! I'm like you a little scared of that payment but hell it wouldn't be not fun without a little Challenge! My whole career I've been with Mack (all older trucks) Rd's, Cl's. Well I want to and got to know for myself is Mack going to continue to live up to its legendary name!!!!!! " why must I chase the Cat, because it's the DOG in ME"!

I run a EPA10 MP7 and have had no emissions related trouble in 4200+hrs and 125,000km.....only actual trouble is the odd engine light and that set of injector cups. However, a good friend of mine has the same motor (MP7 405-M), but with EPA07 emissions, and has had nothing but problems.....I've lost count of how many DPF's he's put in it now. So far, from what i hear and have read, the EPA10 (DPF & DEF) systems seem to do alright. Someone WILL correct me if I'm wrong, lol

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part....

I'm a tech for a fleet of over 50 EPA 10 Mack mp7 and 8. In my opinion they have been great, yes some problem with them now and then, but hardly anything Major, nox sensors, egr diff psi sensors, never replaced any dpf filters. Couple of def pumps which are a bit pricey, but over all they have been good. And these trucks run the rough ass oil field road by drivers that don't give a darn about the equipment.

buy the new mack . our new ones run great to me you cant go back . alot of people disagree though. to me oif you do the glider your getting a rebuilt engine that could be problems in the future you dont know how many miles and hrs are on the block and crank and camshaft .

Have there been a lot of changes to these motors an/or emission's systems since they were first implemented?It seems to me they should have this stuff figured out by now.From what some of you are saying it sounds like 2010 and after aren't bad trucks,except for thunderdogs '12 damn those are the kind of horror stories I keep hearing.But I guess there's gonna be some bad ones,And a good dealer would be VERY important.I like what Im hearing from the guys here who are around fleets of the new trucks it's encouraging to hear 50+ trucks and no major issues.
