He loves splitting wood and is pretty dern good at it, has been doing it since he was big enough to pick up a splitting maul. He has been living with us since he was bout 2, his mother died then. His father, my son, was with the first wave entering Iraq in 2003, was severely wounded and died here at home from injuries in 2007, don't know how he lived 4 years the shape he was in, but he was a strong young man too. Grandson asked me bout 3 years ago if he could call me Dad instead of poppa, told him that was fine by me. I always introduce him as my son, cause that's what I consider him. Hes a fine young man, honor student, super athlete, all around good young man. He has his heart set on playing for University of Texas and then swears hes gonna play in the NFL. bulldog man Posted February 10, 2014 Share Posted February 10, 2014 Randy : Sounds like a good young Man that will go far in life .I was raised by my Grandparents after My dad died of his Injuries from a diesel tank explosion & my mother gave me to my grandparents on my dads side to raise in 1977 .I was 2 yrs old .My grandfather & dad farmed & done excavating also. . Heated the house w/ 2 wood stoves .since I was a kid I was helping w/ wood & as I got older I was splitting wood w/ a maul also & stacking wood .Was on riding on equipment @ 2 yrs old & riding in trucks before that (so I am told) & Pop & his crew had me learning how to operate equipment by age 3 or so .I thank God For my Grandparents raising me cause if it wasn't for them Lord only knows where I would had woundup @ .I In turn helped taking care of my pop (granddad) from age 18 till I was 29 yrs old when he passed @ age 77 .As I felt like I owed it to him for what he done for me.Thank you for your familys service .& KUDOS To you Sir Folks who raise their Grandkids / Niece or Nephew have my upmost Respect . 1 Quote You Cant Fix Stupid. What is his name?Thank you, His name is Daniel, and if you saw a picture of his daddy at Daniels age, 13, now, you would think they were twins. It plays with my mind sometimes. Sometimes at baseball or football games, or at things he just says or does around the house, I feel like I have gone back in time. Every now and then I accidentally call him by his daddys name, Lance. He just looks at me and grins. My Dad tried raising us but was also trying to work a full-time and a part-time job. It got to be too much and we eventually went to live with 2 of our Aunts. One family already had 2 daughters and the other had 3. It wasn't until I was older that I could truly understand and appreciate their selflessness. We were split up, but lived about 1/2 hour apart but My Dad would take us for the day on Saturday and the families got together at one of the houses every Sunday. I have one vivid memory of my Mom as well as photos and a cassette tape of her voice from my cousin's birthday party in 1964. Despite the loss our family suffered, I never once dared to feel sorry for myself and owe a debt of gratitude to my Aunt and Uncle that I could never repay.
