It seems like heavy front axles come thru quite a bit with wedge brakes. My 2 Brockways one 16,000 one 20 000 IH Paystar (sold) had 16,000 and 2 Autocars both 20,000 had wedgies on front. Does anyone have reason why heavy axles have wedgies on front axle ? Thanks Joe D.

Wedges had a ton more stopping power than s cams. But what a pain in the ass to set up. I think most were unhooked.

When the worked they were a LOT more effective than S cams...but when you went to rebuild the actuators, there was a million little parts inside them stinking things. The worm gears would start to seize after a couple winters... Most were disconnected once they started to act up.

i think @ Brockway someone had their had hand in the salemans pocket that was pushing wedge brakes. Brockway did offer the s-cam for the front, its in the parts book with #s

it takes just alittle more arm action, but not bad at all . took it for a test run and all feels well, still have alittle bounce in the front , but this still has 20k plus springs in the front from when it was a plow.

I went from 385's to 425's on my '90 RD also. They wore like iron.I usually carried 17-18K up front. Really liked the fact, when I backed off of a road, they kept the front axle from dragging in the mud like the 385's seemed to do. The bigger diameter was a big +! Guess we should have asked some maintance guys at CF.They were a big user of wedge brakes.Maybe they had the secret for making them work right. I guess I really hated them too much to ask!! Floaters don't turn for sh_t,but then again they're on a heavy front axle that aren't known for their tight turning radius! But they sure look and wear great!

IF YOU BOUGHT IT, A TRUCK BROUGHT IT..AND WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH IT, A TRUCK WILL HAUL IT AWAY!!! Big John Trimble,WRVA
